About the Item
interStella / Quad 1 pt1 is a ten colour archival pigment print on 305gsm, 100% cotton, Hahnemühle fine art paper.

I’ve been working on a new series of 16 drawings, entitled interStella. It’s kind of a mash up of a number of geometries I’ve been studying, but most obviously it’s an exploration, and complication, of the maths underlying the early works of American legend Frank Stella.
I first saw his beautiful, epic, artworks at MOCA in LA in 1991, and was completely blown away. So it’s been on my mind for a long time to try and unpack some of his thinking, and riff on that beautiful style that came out of NYC in the late sixties...
I hope I’ve bought a little fresh thinking and technique to bear too. I’ll leave you to be the judge of that. The digital toolset, as ever, allows you to add layers of complexity, and fine tuning, that perhaps wasn’t previously possible.
As ever I find it easiest to discern in music. I’ve been listening to a lot of Laurel Canyon stuff, and later seventies Stateside sounds, but however fabulous they may be, in many ways they can’t compete with the cut and shut digital styling of recordings from the past few years.
My youngest son has been playlisting a lot of fabulous new music, that I may well not have stumbled across myself, and much of it has the most amazing production. Chelsea Cutler’s Your Shirt is a particularly good example.
Fascinated by her post-analogue production, I had a look on the boards, and found this brilliant explanation of what’s going on:
‘I hear this sound effect in a few different songs but it’s really apparent in “Your Shirt”. I’m talking about that synthy voice thing that’s in the beginning as a lower part and higher part playing back and forth that pops up throughout the song.
Step 1: scream into a mic whilst recording
Step 2: sample audio
Step 3: slap some space designer and maybe eq it if you screamed too loud’
I love the idea of screaming too loud into the mic and then eq-ing the result. I feel that’s exactly what I’ve been doing for a number of years!
Go way over the top, and then dial it back in, to discover a place that’s still further out than you would’ve been able to reach if you’d come in from the other direction... not sure if that makes any sense, but it does to me!

interStella is a series of four quads, each quad comprises four drawings, so sixteen studies in all, including: Quad 1 pt1, Quad 1 pt2, Quad 1 pt3, Quad 2 pt1, Quad 3 pt4 and Quad 4 pt2.

Chuck Elliott
Chuck Elliott (b. 1967, Camberwell, London) is a pioneer of digitally generated art. He claims to have used the first Apple Macintosh imported to the UK in 1984, the same year Apple launched the computers with their now infamous Orwellian advertising campaign. Acquiring his own machine in 1989, he has been drawing, sculpting, editing and compositing digitally ever since. Graduating in 1992, he founded a succession of small, successful studios in London. In 2005 he moved to Bristol, where he now works full time on his sublime, fluid studies in light, colour, motion and liquid geometry. Delighting in the machines' ability to hone and craft sculptural drawings, render, edit, mix, cut, paste, sculpt, and re edit, colour spaces are manipulated, light levels finely tuned, and a myriad of images and series of derivations are produced, using processes analogous to the way in which modern music is realised. Chuck Elliott is reinterpreting the essence of abstract fine art printmaking for the digital age. Pure logical progression.

Le Klint Studio is an inspiration to anyone who loves paper folding, contemporary design, and light. So, of course, I couldn’t resist making a series of origami like geometries for a new set of works on paper in 2015.
Le Klint Studio, to my mind, are particularly well known for their folded paper pendant shades, contemporary designs which are as beautiful as they are ubiquitous.
The image I made is not an identikit line work, more an homage based around some of the origami like folds they use, with the addition of colour glazes and offset transparencies. I've also added a grid like structure of darkly shaded lines and accents, that brings the geometry to life.
The first piece I drew, ACDH (acid house...

Torsion / primer is a variant of an original base drawing that was used to create the ‘torqued’ forms of the more complex Torsion / REZ works on Plexiglass.
The idea comes from a number of places but in particular the modernist sculptural work of Walter Leblanc, and his idea that if you heat up a thin bar of steel, and torque one end through a number of rotations, whilst clamping the other end firmly, the resulting form will be a hugely satisfying candy twist of metal, spiralling up or down, depending on your choice of rotational direction.
For Torsion / primer I drew tall...

Abstract. Vibrant. Painting.
About the Artist:
"I contemplate every color, mark, and placement of the line to formulate what I call rhythmic velocities: relationships of color and motion that give life to the composition, creating a heartbeat. I am interested in the duality of math and design: through repetition, a line made of color becomes a rhythmic pattern. This concept is found when composing music, organic landscapes and architectural structures. By referencing these sources, my abstractions transcend their formal components, reaching beyond a minimalist canon. My work is composed of hard edges and thin lines set against an abstract field or a pictorial space. Each color has a quickness that is relative to the colors surrounding it; this gives my paintings visual movement and dislocates the viewer. Through linear and geometric forms, my paintings explore design and mathematical concepts found broadly throughout culture. They are improvised from a wide range of sources such as my conversations with scholars in various fields of music, architecture and engineering, my life experiences and travels."
