Mask Face Personage features a fantastically playful and wild abstract collage portrait printed in vivid hues of orange, blue, red, purple, pink, yellow, shades of lavender and green, with white accents.
Karel Appel (born April 25, 1921 in Amsterdam, Netherlands; died May 3, 2006 in Zurich, Switzerland),
Karel Appel is one of the founders of the CoBrA avant-garde art movement active from the late 1940s to the early 1950s. His paintings are known for incorporating applications of vibrant and violent colors that often possess a primal, childlike quality.
. Appel attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam (1940-1943) and helped found the "Reflex" group, which became known as CoBRA (for Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam), in 1948. He moved to Paris in 1950 and by the 1960s he had settled in New York City; later it was seen in Italy and Switzerland. In part as a reaction against what they perceived as the sterile academicism of the de Stijl movement, CoBRA artists assimilated a variety of more impulsive influences, including folk art, children's art, and Jean's l'art brut ("crude art"). dubuffett. .
