Hermann Struck (6 March 1876 – 11 January 1944) was a German Jewish artist known for his etchings.
Hermann Struck (Chaim Aaron ben David) was born in Berlin. He studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. In 1904, he joined the modern art movement known as the Berlin Secession. In 1900, Struck met Jozef Israels, a Dutch artist, who became his mentor. Both were recognized as leading artists of their time.
In 1908, Struck published "Die Kunst des Radierens" ("The Art of Etching"), which became a seminal work on the subject (it included an etching by Edvard Munch). It was a textbook that offered both theory and practical instruction. Struck's students included Marc Chagall, Lovis Corinth, Jacob Steinhardt, Lesser Ury and Max Liebermann.
In 1899, upon completing his studies at the Berlin Academy, he was banned from teaching there because he was Jewish. He signed his work with his Hebrew name, Chaim Aaron ben David, and a Star of David. Struck did commissioned portraits of Ibsen, Nietzsche, Freud, Albert Einstein, Herzl, Oscar Wilde and other leading figures of the time.
Struck was a fervent Zionist and Jewish activist. He visited the Land of Israel in 1903, displayed his art at the Fifth Zionist Congress, and was a founder of the Mizrachi Religious Zionist movement. At the same time, he was a German patriot and volunteered for military service in World War I serving as a translator, liaison officer and military artist. He was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class and promoted to an officer for bravery, in 1917 he became the referent for Jewish affairs at the German Eastern Front High Command
Struck immigrated to Palestine in 1922, taught at Bezalel Academy and helped establish the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. He visited Berlin every summer until the Nazis rose to power. Renowned Bezalel School artists include its founder Boris Schatz, Meir Gur Arieh, Zev Raban, Jacob Eisenberg, Jakob Steinhardt, and Hermann Struck.

A Fine Judaica Etching "Atonement" Yom Kippur in the Synagogue
By Samuel George Cahan
Located in Surfside, FL
In this copper plate etching, Cahan captures the religious ardor and penitent sentiment shared by the figures in the artwork. The piece is number seventy-six in a series of one-hundred etchings entitled Atonement. Cahan’s heavy use of line, as well as, his ability to convey emotion give the viewer a sensitive but harmonized rendering of Jewish prayer. Dimensions w/Frame: 17 1/2" x 15"
The well-known twentieth century American illustrator, etcher, and painter Samuel George Cahan was born in Kovno, Russia, now part of Lithuania. His parents were both born in Russia during the early 1870’s. Two years after his birth, his family emigrated to America and eventually settled in New York City's Lower East Side. Cahan said that his interest for drawing started when he was only an infant. In a 1967 interview, the artist describes his primary school years as vastly disinteresting. While other students heeded their teachers or studied math, Cahan drew.
At 12-years-old, Cahan exhibited his early talent for drawing on Fulton Street’s sidewalk. Barefoot and armed with chalk, he crouched outside a restaurant and drew the sinking of Maine. At the time, it was recognizable ship that was smashed by the British. One of the men who passed by his vibrant rendering of the wreckage was the Chief Editor of the New York World newspaper, Nelson Hersh. Upon seeing the young boy’s skill, Hersh offered him a job in the newspaper’s art...

Rare Judaica Cheder Test Hand Colored Etching after Kaufmann
Located in Surfside, FL
This is an etching with hand painted watercolor applied
After Isidor Kaufmann (1853-1921) was an Austro-Hungarian painter of Jewish themes. Having devoted his career to genre painting, he traveled throughout Eastern Europe in search of scenes of Jewish, often Hasidic life.
Born to Hungarian Jewish parents in Arad, Kingdom of Hungary (presently in Romania)
In 1875, he went to the Landes-Zeichenschule in Budapest, where he remained for one year. In 1876, he left for Vienna, but being refused admission to the Academy of Fine Arts there, he became a pupil of the portrait painter Joseph Matthäus Aigner. He then entered the Malerschule of the Vienna Academy, and later became a private pupil of Professor Trenkwald.
His most noted paintings refer to the life of Jews in Poland. They include: Der Besuch des Rabbi (the original of which was owned by Emperor Franz Joseph I, in the Kunsthistorisches Museum), Schachspieler, Der Zweifler (for which he received the gold medal at the Weltausstellung of 1873).
Kaufmann's other honors include: the Baron Königswarter Künstler-Preis, the gold medal of the Emperor of Germany, a gold medal of the International Exhibition at Munich, and a medal of the third class at the Exposition Universelle in Paris.
One of his most prominent students was Lazar Krestin.
Lazar Krestin was born in Kovno, Lithuania and studied in Vienna. He worked in Munich, Vienna and Odessa before emigrating to Palestine. He achieved fame in the German art world for judaic genre scenes and his many sober portraits of Eastern European Jews.
He was part of an important group of Jewish European artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as Moritz Oppenheim, Max Liebermann, Lesser Ury, Jakob Steinhardt, Jehudo Epstein...
