Hernan BasRising Sun
From the beginning of his career, Hernan Bas has made works that depict adolescent male adventures woven with scenes and references from classical poetry, religion, mythology, literature, and popular culture. His varied influences include classic horror films, comics, television, art history, the occult, and fairy tales. In addition, various figures from the Decadent Movement have had a lasting impact on Bas, such as Joris-Karl Huysmans, Edgar Allen Poe, Oscar Wilde, and Charles Baudelaire. Before embarking on each new series, Bas engages in in-depth research into the given subject. Rather than depicting actual historical events or individuals, Bas invents scenes inspired by specific moments in time and places he is familiar with. 'Rising Sun' depicts a young male figure climbing a ladder harvesting apples in an orchard. The title is a pun of sorts where the figure is “rising” and is also the “sun” son in this imagined farming family narrative. Drawing on his interest in lore, the placement of the fruit seemingly balanced on the figure’s head is a nod to William Tell, who, according to legend, successfully shot an arrow through an apple on his son’s head. Printed in Detroit, MI by Our Lady of Perpetual Misery, the coloration of the print was inspired by Paul Gauguin's famed “Volpini Suite” of lithographs.
