Irwin D. Hoffman
Mexican Barber Shop (Getting a shave amidst revelry of community)

1936

About the Item

Irwin Hoffman created a lively scene of a Mexican barber shop that serves as a focal point of the community's life. A man is being shaved as people cook, eat and revel in the camaraderie of the scene. This print was issued by Associated American Artists and is in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Art. Born in East Boston, Massachusetts, painter, lithographer and etcher Irwin Hoffman's early display of talent led to studies beginning at age 15 at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School where, upon graduation from public high school, he became a full time student with a full scholarship. At age 19, Hoffman mounted his first one man exhibit in a Boston gallery. In 1924, the Museum School awarded Hoffman the Paige Traveling Scholarship, its most distinguished prize, which enabled him to travel throughout Europe accompanied by fellow artists and good friends. There he absorbed both the classic traditions of European painting and the avant-garde styles then coming to the fore. Returning to America, Hoffman established a studio in New York City which served him as a lifelong anchor, and from which he traveled during the 30s & 40s with his brothers, owners of a mining enterprise with locations in the American southwest, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. His work addressed the traditions of the ordinary people whom he encountered and befriended. It also reflects Hoffman's strong sense of social consciousness. Irwin Hoffman died at New York City.

  • Morning
    By Caroline Durieux
    Located in New Orleans, LA
Caroline Durieux created the technique (electron print) used in the depiction of "Morning".e. This is only one of 5 impressions. Some have theorized that the image is close to that of the artist's brother, Professor Charles Durieux. In the electron print technique, radioactive isotopes are mixed with printing ink. A drawing is made and exposed face-to-face to paper coated with a radio-sensitized substance. The paper is then developed and produces an exact image of the original drawing. “The image is transferred from the radioactive drawing to the sensitized paper by invisible beta rays,” says Dr. Wheeler. “Since beta rays are electrons, we named the process Electron Printing.” Caroline Durieux (American, 1896 – 1989) Printmaker, painter, satirist, innovator, social activist, Caroline Durieux was born in New Orleans and was already making sketches by the age of four. Her formal art training was at Newcomb College (1912-1917) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1918-1920). Carl Zigrosser of the Philadelphia Museum of Art encouraged Durieux to try lithography. While living in Mexico, she learned lithography from Emilio Amero...

  • Saturday Morning (Market, Taos Plaza, New Mexico), 1950s Figural Linocut Print
    By Barbara Latham
    Located in Denver, CO
1950s American modernists linoleum cut print titled 'Saturday Morning (Market, Taos Plaza, New Mexico) by New Mexican artist Barbara Latham. Portraying figures at a busy outdoor market with mountains in the background. Housed in a custom frame with all archival materials, outer dimensions measure 16 x 17 ¾ inches. Image size is 8 ½ x 10 ½ inches. Print is clean and in very good vintage condition - please contact us for a complete condition report. About the Artist: Beginning her career as a commercial artist, Barbara Latham travelled to Taos in 1925 seeking material for a greeting card. Serendipitously, she also found her life partner, Howard Cook, who was similarly looking for ideas for illustrations. Perhaps both were fueled in their quest by the tales of their mutual teacher, Andrew Dasburg, who knew of the energy and stimulation of this artist community. Observing local people and customs, Latham created genre scenes that offer a window into this now-vanished time and place. Her lively illustrations for numerous children's books are a significant contribution to that graphic art in the mid-20th century. Born in Walpole, Massachusetts, Latham's student days included Norwich Art School and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn; but it was contact with the charismatic Dasburg at the Art Students League in Woodstock that opened her world and her view of art. Getting work with companies like Norcross Publishing and Forum magazine, she eventually made her way to Taos. Among all the spirited young artists gathered there, she met Howard Cook, who was designing illustrations for Willa Cather's Death Comes to the Archbishop. The two married in Santa Fe and began a nomadic life together. The young couple made their way to Paris, a likely destination for modernist artists. Upon receiving a Guggenheim to study fresco painting in 1932, Cook, along with Latham, took an alternative direction and headed to Taxco, Mexico. At this time, Mexican muralists, such as Diego Rivera, were capturing the attention of progressive artists. During the Depression, both Cook and Latham aligned themselves with a populist ideal. Latham contributed work, such as "Fording the Stream" and "Bear Family," to the American Artists Group, which was founded to produce original prints at affordable prices. The couple also travelled in the Deep South to the Ozarks and to "Alabama's Black Belt." When Latham settled in Taos, she was committed to an art of and for the people. Rather than a romanticized re-creation, her choice of subjects was based in common everyday activities, favoring those which brought people together. Taos Pueblo was an ancient, indigenous community, and Latham's view extended that tradition into a contemporary, multi-ethnic village. Sharing some of the spirit of WPA photographs...
