About the Item

Kent Hagerman was an amazing draftsman who managed to get fantastic detail into his work while showing the environment and atmosphere. This print captures the moment a 'pod' is being fastened onto a plane. Only one XC-120 (the X is for experimental) was ever built but the idea was that 'pods' could be packed in advance and then attached to the aircraft. This was to make loading a plane faster. Subsequent large-bodied plane designs made this idea obsolete. The man near left seems to be studying the plans for this operation. The words 'United States Air Force' appear on the side of the body of the plane and the artist's etched signature is in the image at the center right. (The Air Force had already separated from the Army by the time this plane was built.)

Kent Hagerman, (US Air Force Fairchild C-119, the 'Flying Boxcar')
By Kent Hagerman
Located in New York, NY
While this is probably a military airport, Kent Hagerman still shows it at its futuristic best. Hagerman was an amazing draftsman who managed to get fantastic detail into his work. This is really a portrait of a plane -- the Fairchild C-119. The words 'United States Air Force' on the side of the plane date it to 1947 or later, after the Air Force split from the Army. The design featured the 'twin boom' clearly showing in this etching. Thanks to this feature it was called the Flying Boxcar. About 1100 were built and used until 1955. It was also used by the Chinese Air...

Zygmund Jankowski, Come Fly with Me
By Zygmund Jankowski
Located in New York, NY
Zygmund Jankowski is known for his modernist compositions and effective use of “the white of the paper.” 'Come Fly with Me' perfectly illustrates that skill; It is signed, titled, and dated in pencil. Jankowski was born in South Bend, Indiana. After serving in the US Navy Jankowski attended the California College of Arts and Crafts, where studied with Victor DeWilde, Otis Oldfield, and George Post. Returning to the mid-west he taught at Indiana University, South Western Michigan College, Hilton Leech School of Art, the Bremen Art Center, the Niles Art Center, the South Bend Art Association, and the Rockport Art Association. Beginning in 1964 he summered in Rocky Neck, MA, and opened a summertime gallery. In the 1970s he made a permanent move to Gloucester where he held workshops at his studio. In the 1990s he moved to Lanesville. Among those institutions with work by Jankowski is the Cape Ann Museum. In their biography of the artist they acknowledge his role of inspiring a generation of Cape Ann artists...

Located in ludlow, GB
Early Twentieth Century Aviation Vintage Aircraft Airplane Framed Gouache Painting of Imperial Airways Hannibal. One of a set of three that were painted by the well known Artist and Illustrator Charles Thomas Howard. Each was painted to be published as postcards so these are the original artworks. They are in good clean condition with fresh and vibrant colours I have had them framed in handmade gold frames with a flecked cream mount. Can be sold individually or as a set, they look really striking displayed together. “Three Studies of Airplanes” Gouache, Signed and Framed. Charles Thomas Howard was born in Boston, Lincolnshire in 1865 and after he married in 1905 moved to London where he pursued his career as Painter and Illustrator. He did many works that were produced as postcards as these three all were. He worked for at least three publishers and was incredibly highly sought after. His work was diverse but he specialised in Aviation, Railways and Military subjects. His work is held in many Art Libraries including the Bridgeman and as postcards have been reprinted many times over the years and still resonate with todays audiences. 1942 Stinson "Sentinel" USA liaison plane identification poster WW2
Located in London, GB
To see our other original vintage warbird aeroplane posters, photographs and paintings, scroll down to "More from this Seller" and below it click on "See all from this Seller" 1942 Army L-5 Stinson "Sentinel" - World War II USA liaison plane Original aeroplane recognition poster (1942) 63x47cm A particularly unusual style of aeroplane identification poster, owing to the very arty images. Most such posters rely on very plain silhouettes, this series - and we have many in this series - have a much more arty approach to the task with shading and an interesting angle view. The Stinson L-5 Sentinel was a World War II era liaison aircraft used by all branches of the U.S. military and by the British Royal Air Force. It was produced by the Stinson Aircraft Company. Along with the Stinson L-1 Vigilant, the L-5 was the only other American liaison aircraft of World War II that was purpose-built for military use and had no civilian counterpart. All other military liaison airplanes adopted during World War II were lightly modified "off-the-shelf" civilian models. Capable of operating from short unimproved airstrips, the L-5 "Sentinel" delivered personnel, critical intelligence and needed supplies to the front line troops. On return flights, wounded soldiers were often evacuated to rear area field hospitals...
