Modern abstract black and white etching of three men in uniform on horseback. Dated and titled in lower left corner and signed in the lower right in pencil. Hung in a complimentary black matte and frame. Includes original 1970s purchase information on the back. Dimensions Without Frame: H 11 in. x W 9 in. Artist Biography: Lucas Johnson (1940-2002) was born in Hartford, Connecticut and raised in southern California. His work is included in the permanent collections of The Menil Collection, Houston, Texas; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; Jose Luis Cuevas Museum of Drawings, Mexico, D.F.; Toledo Museum, Oaxaca, Mexico; Museum of Modern Art, Tel-Aviv, Israel; National Museum, Warsaw, Poland; Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, New York; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California, to name a few. His work has been exhibited internationally including at the Serpentine Gallery in London in 1987 and has also been included in many museum exhibitions. In 2006 the Houston Artists Fund published the book, The Art and Life of Lucas Johnson with a preface by Walter Hopps, the founding curator of the Menil Collection, an essay by art historian Edmund P. Pillsbury, and a chronology by Patricia Covo Johnson.

This particular work is included in the 1975 Portfolio "Omaggio a Michelangelo" (Homage to Michelangelo) which comprises 13 prints (8 partly colored etchings and 5 color lithographs). Artist Biography: Giacomo Manzù, original name Giacomo Manzoni, (born December 22, 1908, Bergamo, Italy—died January 17, 1991, Ardea), Italian sculptor who, in the mid-20th century, revived the ancient tradition of creating sculptural bronze doors for ecclesiastical buildings. His sober realism and extremely delicate modeling alternately achieved austere severity and sensuousness of form and surface, lending a new spirit of vitality to figurative bronze sculpture. Manzù had to leave school at an early age to learn a trade, and he was apprenticed to local craftsmen who taught him to carve wood and to work in metal and stone. After service in the Italian army from 1927 to 1928, Manzù went to Paris to try his luck as a sculptor, but after three weeks he collapsed from hunger and was deported back to Italy. He settled in Milan, and, after receiving a commission in 1929 to decorate a chapel at the Catholic University, he devoted himself to sculpting full-time. Manzù’s early works were nudes, portraits, and biblical subjects, executed in a style that at first was influenced by Etruscan, Egyptian, and medieval art. Man on Horseback is a lithograph a on paper realized during the 20th century by Sergio Barletta. Hand-signed on the lower right in pencil. From the edition of 25 prints.  In good condition. Sergio Barletta  (1934) is an Italian cartoonist and illustrator, who has also published some humorous and political satire books. From the age of 22 is active in Rome, where he worked as an illustrator and art director in some monthly magazines like “Costume”, Diners Club house organ, BP Review, IBM, and others. In 1965 started the joint-working with Marino Gallery in Rome, and in 1966 in Milan with Humour Graphic’s group, at Levi Gallery and others in the following years. In these years graphic work and illustration are mixed with painting and photography, also with satirical drawings for Rinascita, weekly of the Italian communist party; Azione Sociale, weekly of ACLI Catholic Workers Association; movie posters, advertising for Gucci, some writings for Popular Photography Italiana, lay-outs, writings and illustrations for Avinews, bimonthly for tour operators and so on. During the eighties he starts a long co-operation with satirical weekly “Il Sale”, complemented by a book with Ottaviano edizioni in Milan and others publications in Turin and Rome, all of satirical drawings. In this period he collaborates with Linus, the most important Italian comics monthly, and Harakiri, a humour weekly published in France.
