Cette pointe sèche est issue de l'album "Salon du Champ-de-Mars de 1893", album d’eaux fortes et pointes sèches originales qui contenait 20 gravures d’après les œuvres exposées au Salon de la Société nationale des Beaux-Arts.
Celle-ci s'inspire du tableau "Dans la prairie", l'une des quatre oeuvres exposées en 1893 par Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret (1852-1929) au Salon, tableau aujourd'hui conservé en collection privée. Il figure une jeune gardeuse de vache qui tourne vers le spectateur un visage triste, révélant la dureté de sa condition, et, tout en étant déjà empreint de symbolisme, compte parmi les dernières oeuvres produites durant la période naturaliste de l'artiste.
La version gravée adapte légèrement la composition du tableau, éliminant la tête de la vache pour se concentrer sur la paysanne et ajoutant une petite grenouille assez surprenante dans l'angle supérieur gauche.
