Printed on Arches paper by James Reed at Milestone Graphics. Reed chop stamp lower left corner Printed on Arches paper Condition: Excellent (mint) Image/sheet size: 27 1/2 x 22 inches America’s Family and America’s Family II In 2016, Sedrick Huckaby worked on two series of lithographs published by Thomas French Fine Art and Valley House Gallery and Sculpture Garden entitled America’s Family and America's Family II. The series of lithographs include portraits of the artist’s family—America’s Dad, Mom, Son, Daughter and Child. This publication marks the artist’s first experience with the classic lithographic process utilizing 19th century lithography stones and learning the old world tradition of stone lithography from the master printer James Reed, owner of Milestone Graphics. Reed was a Ford Foundation Fellow at Tamarind in 1973-1975. He worked closely with Huckaby and printed the editions. A video on the legacy of stone lithography is being created by American View Productions (Dan Makara, Executive Producer & Frank Borres, Director), including a segment of Huckaby creating these lithographs with Reed at Milestone Graphics. Born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1975, Huckaby has been creating art since his childhood. In 1995, he began his formal art studies at Texas Wesleyan University in his hometown. After a brief stay he transferred to Boston University, where he received a BFA degree. He then earned a MFA degree from Yale University in New Haven, CT. Huckaby is known for his draftsmanship and powerful use of color. His exploration of cultural roles and the heritage of the African American family are well documented. His work initially evolved from portraiture to objects and interiors that venerate his personal family legacy rooted in Fort Worth, TX. Portraying these familiar subjects on a large scale and pushing his use of materials, Huckaby defines the significance of family and tradition while touching on the importance of community in our culture. America’s Family represents a continuation of this exploration of these themes. For the past few years Huckaby has concentrated his efforts on a series of quilt paintings. One of the series he created is a tribute to both of his Grandmothers and a celebration of the African American quilting tradition. Inspired by John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, Sedrick used actual quilts sewn by family members as models for this 80’ long painting of the four seasons. Metaphorically, these quilts document significant events in his family history. The expressive prints in America’s Family pay homage to the rich use of thick impasto paint which he uses to create these large quilt murals and portraits. Huckaby has received the 2001 Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, the 2004 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant Program Award, and was the 2008 recipient of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship Award, which allowed him to finish his monumental A Love Supreme. In 2016, he was one of the winners of the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition at The National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D. C. His work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Recently, Huckaby’s 18-by-14-foot oil painting Hidden in Plain Site (2011) was on view in the Amon Carter Museum’s atrium.
