About the Item

Lithograph. Belongs to the Series "Atlante di Botanica popolare ossia Illustrazione di Piante Notevoli di ogni famiglia" (Atlas of popular botany or illustration of notable plants of each family), published in Napoli, by Raimondo Petrajola, in 1872/76. This is the first edition of a popular suite illustrating in a clear and beautiful way the different species of plants. Very good condition except for some foxing. The author (1825-1886) was the grandson of the eminent Italian botanist Michele Tenore, director of the botanical garden of Naples, professor of botany, and author of numerous scientific works. Zoology Print of Jellyfish, Corals and Marine Invertebrates by T Bromme - c1865
Located in Langweer, NL
Zoology Print of Jellyfish, Corals and Marine Invertebrates by T Bromme c1865 This exceptional hand-colored lithograph, printed circa 1865 by German geographer and educator Traugott Bromme, illustrates a diverse selection of cnidarians and lower marine invertebrates. The plate is taken from Bromme’s influential *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, which served as both an educational tool and a visual record of 19th-century scientific understanding. The composition prominently features several jellyfish species (2, 3, 4, 5, 6), each drawn in exquisite detail to showcase their translucent bodies, flowing tentacles, and umbrella-like bells. One species (1) resembles a comb jelly or ctenophore, with internal rows of cilia and trailing appendages, hinting at the era’s growing knowledge of deep-sea life. Equally striking are the representations of corals and polyp colonies. A large central brain coral (10) is surrounded by branching and staghorn coral species (9, 11), red coral (12), and coral polyps (7, 8), including both individual and colonial organisms. Small-scale illustrations of microscopic life (15–19) suggest zooplankton, sponges, or protists, rendered with the precision of early microscopy. Bromme’s work was aimed at making natural science accessible and visually compelling. The accuracy and artistic quality of this lithograph make it especially desirable for collectors of marine biology and antique scientific illustration...
