CUYAMA COUNTRY (Unique state)

c. 1935

$7,750

About

FRANCES H. GEARHART (1869 - 1958) CUYAMA COUNTRY, c. 1935 Color block print. signed and titled in pencil. Image 12 x 9 inches. On fibrous paper.. Unknown edition, but very uncommon, likely 25 or fewer. AN UNIQUE IMPRESSION (SEE BELOW). A good impression and generally good condition, aside from the usual stray ink in the margins (Gearhart was sloppy). The usual tack holes for printing along the right sheet edge. Some creases in the margins. >The fibrous sheet is backed with a sheet of thin card. This impression example was exhibited in the major Gearhart retrospective "Behold The Day -The Color Block Prints of Frances Gearhart' . Pasadena Museum of California Art, 2009-10 co-curated by this dealer.. It was illustrated in the accompanying catalog on page 81. This is an unique example with a hand painted distant ridge behind the trees. All other known impressions have an additional printed ridge line. See illustration of the usual distant ridge in the final photograph. However, every Gearhart print is individually inked and printed. No two impressions are the same. She varies the colors and the inking from one to the next. A very good large scale Gearhart in her most important fully developed period where she produced her largest and finest prints, Most recently this dealer, curated an exhibition of over 60 Gearharts at the Wichita Art Museum. "Frances H. Gearhart in Wichita 1922 - 1937", - July 2020 - February 2021. There is a 91 page accompanying catalog written by this dealer.
