About the Item

This original poster was created for the off-Broadway production of City Junket, written by acclaimed New York poet Kenward Elmslie. The play ran at Playhouse 46 in New York City from April 16 to May 25, 1980. Red Grooms, known for his dynamic, playful artistic style, designed both the sets and costumes, which famously included imaginative robot-themed designs that brought a futuristic and whimsical energy to the production. Grooms’ contribution to City Junket reflects his distinctive blend of pop art and theatrical creativity, merging visual art with performance in a uniquely engaging way. This poster, tied to both the literary and artistic communities of 1980s New York, serves as a significant collectible piece, showcasing the collaboration between Elmslie’s poetic narrative and Grooms’ inventive visual world.
