Giovanni Battista PiranesiVaso Cinerario di Gran Mole, etching from "Vases, Candelabras, Grave, Stones..."1778
1778
About the Item
Well-knowned as an architect and an archaeologist, undoubtedly Giovanni Battista Piranesi, is the most important engraver of the 18th century: the leading artist in this field in the period going from Rembrandt to Goya. Generations after him would continue to imagine Ancient Rome as he portrayed it in his magnificent “Vedute”.
In the last period, Piranesi’s activities, above all as an editor, were characterised by a more commercial flavour. By this time he was already very famous, and created the series of decorative plates of antiquities, collected in his work “Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne, ed ornamenti antichi disegnati ed incisi dal cav. Gio. Batt. Piranesi pubblicati l’anno MDCCLXXIIX”, 1778, (Vases, candelabras, grave, stones, sarcophagi, tripods, lamps, and ornaments designed and etched by Cav. Gio.Batt. Piranesi, published in the year 1778), printed and integrated by his son Francesco. Posthumous work, it is a compendium of various items of Roman furniture, will make the rules as regards Neoclassical furniture fashion and flavour in European affluent salons of 17-18 th century.
A fine proof, printed on contemporary filigree laid paper, wide margins, showing an antique marble great deal vase, whose details are described in the ending note. The piece is dedicated, as in the header, to “Sir Guglielmo Constable, English Cavaliere, patron of fine arts, as a mark of profound respect, Cavaliere Gio. Batta. Piranesi D.D.D.”. Not signed. In very good conditions. Lightly browned paper with usual folds, and some tiny marks, tiny stitching holes in the higher margin. Left flap lightly eroded.

Giovanni Battista Piranesi
Piranesi was born in Venice in 1720 and died in Rome in 1778. He was the son of a stone mason and was trained as an architect. After a slow start he eventually achieved great success as an architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer. His mission was to glorify the architecture of ancient Rome through his engravings and etchings. His highly dramatized prints often depict imaginary interiors and frequently include figures in mysterious activities, who are dwarfed by the magnitude of their monumental surroundings. Piranesi's style greatly influenced the neoclassical art movement of the late 18th century. His dramatic scenes inspired generations of set designers, as well as artists, architects and writers. His prints have continued to increase in value to institutions and collectors.

Izzy with her Ball, Dog Art, Affordable Art, Contemporary Animal Art Print

Izzy, a charming characterful terrier stands alert, holding her ball in her mouth. Colour etching hand made and printed by the artist.
Helen Fay's art for sale online and in our gallery at Wychwood Art. Animals have always been at the heart of my work. I find the form, movement and behaviour of the creatures I draw a source of limitless fascination. I love the idea of them watching me, watching them as I draw. I hope my appreciation of the sentience and character of the animals I draw comes across in my work. Over my career I have drawn everything from primates to penguins, dogs, ostriches and even an echidna. These days dogs are my main focus, mostly because I adore dogs but also because they are such an integral part of life. I am delighted by the theory that humans and dogs co evolved, we wouldn’t be what we are without them and vice versa. I try to pare my images down to a balanced simplicity that directs attention to the subject of the picture. I try to balance the subject and the space it occupies, giving each equal importance. Light is hugely important to my work, I imagine my subject in three dimensions as I draw and the light describes the musculature and texture that gives the drawing it’s presence and grounds it in the picture. I aim to capture a pause, a moment where whatever I draw looks like it could wander off or leap up any minute. My influences include Japanese prints, Chinese and Japanese brush drawing and the European artists who were influenced by Japan. I am really excited by composition, by artists like Bonnard and Leon Spilliaert. I have long been a fan of Munch for his direct mark-making, colour and intensity and at the other end of the spectrum, Hammershoi for his limited palette, sense of space and calm. I am interested in black and white photography and film and have recently discovered and been amazed by the films of Yasujiro Ozu...

Silver Rock Melon: A Framed 19th C. Color Engraving by George Brookshaw
By George Brookshaw
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a 19th century colored aquatint and stipple engraving finished by hand entitled "Silver Rock Melon", drawn and engraved by George Brookshaw and published in London in 1812 as plate 67 in his 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'. It depicts a Silver Rock Melon still on the vine, but the melon lies on a heater green mat. A wedge of the melon has been dissected to reveal its inner anatomy, including the seeds. The melon skin is a heather and light green color, while the inner portions are a light peach color. The vine and leaves are shown attractive shades of light green and there are soft yellow flowers. The plant is displayed on a light brown textured background with shadows to impart 3-dimensionality. The scene is reminiscent of an engraving in an 18th century artistically stylized human anatomy atlas. There are wide white margins. The title and inscription lies within the lower border.
This striking engraving is presented in a reddish brown decorative wood frame with a darker brown scroll-work outer trim and a gold-colored inner fillet and a thick heather green mat. The frame measures 25.75" high, 21.5" wide and 1.13" deep. It is glazed with UV conservation glass. There is a short thin vertical line of discoloration in the lower margin through the word "melon" and a tiny spot in the upper margin on the left. The print and frame are otherwise in excellent condition.
There is a second Brookshaw engraving that is framed in identical moulding, although a slightly different size and a different color mat. t depicts a cluster of grapes. The two prints would make a striking display pairing...
