Pisapia's "Expedition Series," inspired by sea voyages, is about meeting life’s challenges with courage and purpose. It connects to the idea expressed by J.W. Goethe: “Character is formed in the stormy billows of the world.” Taking up life’s tasks can require one to go against the wind. The feeling of determination to achieve and continue steering through obstacles is poured into the pure forms; a dynamic balancing of the straight and curve on different axes. "With a rounded starting point," Pisapia explains, "I add on a variety of disparate angles, diverse curves, and twisting planes. I carve and smooth the surfaces, bringing out particular tensions and transitions."
Flavius Valone Pisapia is an Italian-Romanian artist born in Bucharest in 1981. He completed his higher education in the UK, with an MA in Transpersonal Arts & Therapy, 2014; a Diploma in Transformative Arts, 2011; and a BA (Hons) in Film and Video, 2005. Pisapia studied sculpture throughout his higher education and appreciated several sculptor mentors in the UK. Since 2016, he has resided in India, where he is currently an artist in residence at Studio Sukriti in Jaipur. He has had several solo exhibitions in India and his artwork is found in private collections worldwide.

This long hanging sculpture by David Licata is composed of square links of clear and white torch-worked borosilicate glass. The square links are joined together in a Japanese four-to-one chain maille pattern, cascading downward from three clear glass tubes suspended from the ceiling by clear monofilament wire. The result is an ethereal, delicate work that casts dynamic shadows on its surroundings and glistens in light.
Transforming rods of borosilicate glass with fire, David Licata uses a variety of gas torches to pull, stripe, blend, twist and bend glass into ornate links which are transformed into an elaborate wall sculptures of undulating glass. Licata who is exceptionally knowledgeable and adept at creating historic chaine maille patterns often bases his contemporary artwork in that tradition. Licata’s sculptures explore the ideas of protection inherant in chain maille and linked fencing in contradiction to the implicit fragility of glass. Variously transparent and opaque, solid and ephemeral, his glass sculptures are solid forms and also cast shadows that are fugitive and integral parts of the artwork.
David Licata’s work ranges from cascading glass wall sculptures to wearable chain maille. A devoted naturalist, he is inspired by hiking and the outdoors. The artist works with notions of the fragility, strength, vanity, and protection by using traditional metalsmithing techniques in the intricate torch-worked glass.
David Licata is a graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art where he earned his MFA in Metalsmithing and of SUNY New Paltz where he earned his BFA in Sculpture and BS in Art Education.
Licata’s artwork has been exhibited at SOFA (The Sculpture Objects Functional Art and Design fair) NY, SOFA Chicago, Glass Weekend, Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center, Millville, NJ, Talente Internationale Handwerksmesse, Munich Germany and The Glass Art Society Conference and Fashion Show in Murano, Italy. During the post-war period, when the countries of Eastern Europe were locked down behind the Iron Curtain, weavers there found materials in short supply. As a result, many of these artists turned to unconventional materials such as metal, paper and reeds. Zofia Butrymowicz, of Poland, recognized for innovative works in 60s and 70s, used heavy, irregular wools, barely spun at all. In 1969, she visited Canadian weaver, Mariette Rousseau-Vermette and her husband, painter and ceramicist, Claude Vermette, outside Montreal where the couple lived and worked. Zofia and Mariette had both been participants in International Tapestry Biennials in Lausane, Switzerland in the 60s and in Wall Hangings at the MoMA in New York in 1969.
Butrymowicz stayed with the Vermettes for several months, using Mariette’s looms to create tapestries that were displayed with Claude’s ceramics at a local gallery. Butrymowicz used wool from Mariette’s source. Mariette was particular about the color and intensity of her wool — she worked with technicians to perfect the spinning and dyeing so that the wool had a silky luster and dyed “more beautifully” than mechanically spun wool. The wool was a marked departure from the material Butrymowicz had access to in Poland. She “painted” her weavings with colors and shadings of yarns, including only a shimmering suggestion of a shape, often a circle, as she had done in the past, but the glisten and sumptuousness of the yarn in these works set them apart from her previous weavings.
