Stephen Walling
Side by Side - (Monochromatic Wooden Wall Sculpture with Vertical Lines)

2016

About the Item

36 x 24 x 2 inches acrylic, incised wood Stephen Walling’s painted wood constructions incorporate both a playful usage of color with geometry and a dialogue with nature using an oftentimes monochromatic color scheme. Walling understands the power of design and color as proved by his experience as an award winning Art Director for Conde Nast Publications. Walling’s constructions revel in a three-dimensionality incorporating color and shadow. Some of the geometric pieces have a spatial presence that creates an optical illusion. Others are like puzzles with fitted pegs and blocks of wood. Several of Walling’s works inspired by nature have a lyrical quality. They are monotone in color and make references to organic forms. The painted wood shards are delicately assembled with the cut edges facing the viewer to create the look of a dense forest. Highly textured surfaces while creating fascinating shadow patterns, Walling's work is a unique alternative to a 2 dimensional painting on canvas.
