William Zorach (American 1891-1966)
First Steps, 1918
Bronze
8.5 x 5 x 4 inches, including base
Born in 1887 in Lithuania, William Zorach immigrated with his family to the United States when he was just four years old, settling in Cleveland, Ohio. Zorach displayed an exceptional artistic talent at a young age and, at the recommendation of his seventh-grade teacher, began studying lithography at night at the Cleveland School of Art. It was not long before he was apprenticing at a lithography company in Cleveland. It was there that he realized he wanted to become an artist - to escape the commercial end of the field in which he was suddenly immersed.
In 1907, Zorach saved enough money to move to New York and study art at the National Academy of Design, where he received several awards for his paintings and drawings. He continued his studies in Paris in 1910 at La Palette. This year abroad would turn out to be quite fruitful because in Paris he was greatly influenced by the Cubist and Fauvist movements and had several paintings exhibited at the Salon d'Automme. This influence and subsequent success fueled his career back in the states where he was honored with his first one-man exhibition. Due to this new-found stability, he married a young woman he met at school in Paris, and they moved to New York and set up a studio. Shortly after, their work was accepted into the famous 1913 Armory Show.
For the next nine years, Zorach continued to think of himself as a painter, although he had already begun to experiment in sculpting. He was experiencing modest success with his painting and was therefore reluctant to abandon it completely. However, he was impelled toward sculpting, and in 1922, he painted his last oil.
Zorach's involvement with sculpture began largely be accident. While he was working on a series of wood-block prints, Zorach suddenly became more interested in the butternut panel than the print and turned the panel into a carved relief. With no formal training as a sculptor, Zorach's first sculptures were of wood and his carving tools were primitive, such as a jack-knife. I n fact, his early works have a certain stylized look, suggesting the influence of various primitive arts such as African and American folk.
Zorach found his sculptural direction by instinct, but was not unaware of what other sculptors were doing, both here and abroad. He soon allied himself with a growing number of modern sculptors who believed in the esthetic necessity of carving their own designs directly in the block of stone or wood rather than modeling them in clay. From the beginning he found a deep satisfaction in the slow and patient process of freeing the image from its imprisoning block, watching the forms emerge and appear.
"The actual resistance of tough material is a wonderful guide," Zorach said in a lecture on direct sculpture in 1930. The sculptor "cannot make changes easily, there is no putting back tomorrow what was cut away today. His senses are constantly alert. If something goes wrong there is the struggle to right the rhythm. And slowly the vision grows as the work progresses." Zorach also found that the material itself had a constantly modifying effect on the artist's vision. The grain of the wood, the markings in the stone, the shape of the log or boulder all set limits and suggested possibilities. He was always sensitive to the characteristic qualities of his material and occasionally let them play a major role in determining his forms. In works such as these, the feel of the original material is preserved in the finished piece and is often heightened by leaving parts of the original surface untouched and other areas roughly marked by the sculptors tools...

The Fruits of Our Labor. The Historic Jar Series. Porcelain
Located in Miami Beach, FL
The three series that make up her thesis show all center around the woman as an art historical trope who becomes a contemporary archetype of tenderness and tenacity with her own narrative. The tradition of the woman as muse or object is questioned and turned upside down as she gives her women the position of subject, i.e., the position of power. The jars, which uphold pairs of women, are the ultimate overturn of male dominance as she removes and replaces all male characters from famous artworks with women...

"Tigre atacando" 1/20, mini sculpture, special edition, art toy, tiger, Mexican
Located in Ciudad de México, MX
A piece from the exhibition "Cosmic Duality" by artist Mr. Mitote.
Mitote is a term we use today to describe a lively, noisy, and excessive gathering. It’s also used to depict tumultuous gatherings marked by disorder, commotion, and sometimes even quarrels. In the colonial past, mitote was a celebration commemorating the establishment of the New Spain kingdom, blending local pride with imperial solemnity. However, throughout both ancient times and the present day, mitotes serve as rituals embedded in the culture and religiosity of various indigenous groups in Mexico, such as the Nahua, Cora, Tepehuan, and Huichol. Adorned in rich attire, gathered around a fire amidst the sounds of musical instruments, and under the intoxicating influence of alcoholic beverages, mitotes serve as occasions to invoke sacred beings—whether protective deities of nature or Christian saints associated with agriculture—to pray for bountiful harvests. Mitotes encompass and have always embodied rites, myths, and life.
In homage to the artist’s name, this exhibition is presented as a mitote: a celebration displaying the intimate mythologies of its creator through various artistic expressions such as sculpture, artwork, and video. Cosmic Duality is a concept wherein Mr. Mitote delves into memories of his childhood from a contemporary perspective. His mother introduced him at a young age to the traditions and customs of her native Maltrata, Veracruz, a town steeped in the memory of a noble past wherein it fought for its autonomy. Every year on January 1st, to invoke prosperity, the dance of the huehues (meaning “old people” or “elders” in Nahuatl) is performed. According to oral and local traditions, these characters embody foes in a mocked and vanquished manner, dancing beneath the lash of a tiger or devil. Their costumes feature pre-Columbian symbols merged with elements evoking nature, alongside nods to contemporary entertainment culture.
Through the observation and interpretation of nature, numerous ancestral cultures created dual cosmologies. Far from viewing opposites, they conceived of dual complementary systems such as chaos-order, cold-heat, humidity-drought, feminine-masculine, and life-death, among others, to uphold cosmic order. Placed within the context of Mexico City, Mr. Mitote reimagines these enduring principles from ancient religious practices alongside contemporary languages. He does so through vibrant entities that blend tradition and innovation, memory and fantasy, past and present, ancestral ceremonies, and urban rituals. Each artwork serves as a reminder that across all latitudes and human territories, culture thrives, tradition evolves continuously, the past is revitalized, and the present shapes the path forward into the future.
The body has served as the quintessential conduit bridging two dual dimensions: the human and the divine, the earthly and the celestial, the microcosm and the macrocosm. In several of his artworks, Mr. Mitote invokes propitiatory dances, and ritual practices, aimed at attracting abundant rain and fostering good harvests, many of which entail risking the physical well-being and even the lives of participants. The tiger hunt...

Hole in the Wall
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This original piece by Luke O'Sullivan is made from wood that the artist has silkscreen printed onto with his original drawings and patterns, which he then cut and assembled into a three-dimensional, wall-hanging sculpture. The finished piece measures 14”h x 11.5”w x 4.25”d.
About the Artwork
O’Sullivan creates invented buildings, places, and objects describing unexplored worlds conjuring a sense of discovery and adventure. Rise and Shine represents a shift from the artist’s earlier work featuring structures, facades, and panoramic landscapes toward a more detailed approach. These new works depict encapsulated, floating environments devoid of humans. The sculptural objects are keepsakes or relics from these faraway places. Each piece plays with the shifting relationships between two and three dimensions, surface and underworld. O’Sullivan’s recent screen prints introduce color, imbuing these works with a certain levity and illustrative quality.
The playful nature of O’Sullivan’s work draws from Nintendo games, maps, science fiction movies, and movie set design. Likening his process to a lego set...

A PAIR OF ORIGINAL Scottish Wall Hung Sculpture Compositions GLASGOW INTEREST
Located in Cirencester, GB
Artist: John Taylor (1936-) Scottish
Title: "Wall Relief Tiles" (a pair)
Medium: oil on board
Size: 15cm x 20cm inc. frame & 13cm x 21cm inc. frame
Notes: Painter, notably in watercolour, and printmaker, gallery owner and teacher, born in Darvel, Ayrshire. Graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1959, some years later taking a higher diploma in art. Taylor made a big impact on the Scottish gallery scene when in 1963 he opened the New Charing Cross Gallery in Glasgow, giving young artists a chance to exhibit more adventurous work. Taylor had a long association with the Glasgow Print Studio as senior technician. In 1977, with Ainslie Yule, he was recommended by Scottish Arts Council for a residency at Editions Alecto to work on a screenprint. Taylor’s own work could sometimes have a strong polemical element, notably regarding war and the nuclear threat. As well as taking part in many group shows across Europe he was a regular solo exhibitor. Notable among these were Compass Gallery, Glasgow, 1985 and 1987; Richard Demarco Gallery in Edinburgh and Glasgow Print Studio in 1987; and Edinburgh Print...
