Pablo Picasso
Cavalier et Cheval

1952

About the Item

Pablo Picasso's (1881-1973) love affair with ceramics started in 1946, when he came across a pottery fair in the South of France. There, he met the proprietors of the Madoura Pottery workshop and started a collaborative relationship with the studio that lasted until his death. Inspired by Spanish folk ceramics, Picasso embraced traditional motifs such as bullfights, roosters, suns, and faces. He appreciated the medium for combining both painting and sculpture, using the three-dimensional surfaces as a canvas for exploring his favorite motifs. This pitcher emulates and depicts a horse and Picador, both in shape and imagery. The jug's shape is round on the sides with a tall spout on the front, it's body shaped like the horse it represents. On the front of the spout, like a figure-head on a ship, stands the Picador, leading his animal to the ring. A tree and blue petal-like shapes adorn the other side of the vessel, adding to the scene being depicted. Picasso enjoyed the Picador as an image, and depicted it throughout his oeuvre. Picasso was known for being a prolific artist. Over a 24-year period, he is believed to have produced over 3000 unique ceramic pieces and 600 editions. Enthusiastic about the medium, he worked on plates, vases, bowls, sculptures, and pitchers. His ceramics are imbued with a sense of joy and freedom. Having created them in his 60's and in the charming South of France at his summer home, it's no wonder Picasso was so playful with his clay creations. He ultimately met his second wife--Jacqueline Roque--at the Madoura workshop, further enhancing the uplifting motifs in this vein of his work. Part of Picasso's drive to create pottery was that it was an accessible medium, able to be produced on a scale that his paintings could not. The ceramics were palatable to those in the general public who found his paintings to be either too expensive or too controversial. They were sold for around $100 in the 1950s and 1960s, and received little attention from important collectors. Today, however, his pottery is widely adored, with one-of-a-kind pieces showing soaring prices. In 2016, Le Hibou (Rouge et Blanc) (1953)—a unique earthenware sculpture of a patterned owl—set a record for Picasso's ceramics, fetching over $2.4 million at Christie’s. Questions about this piece? Venus Figure
By Sorel Etrog
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Sorel Etrog (1933 - 2014) is arguably Canada's most famous sculptor. His works can be found in numerous museums and private collections including the Tate, the AGO and LACMA. His public sculptures can be found on iconic corners in Toronto, Montreal, Israel and beyond. The Art Gallery of Ontario organized a major retrospective of his work that ran in 2013. This work is the earliest Etrog sculpture Caviar20 has handled to date. It is from Etrog's debut period and may be one of his first works to be casted. This untitled work aka "Venus Figure" merges two signature elements that Etrog employs or combines frequently - the primitive with modernist figuration. The proportions and curves of this work recall the ancient "Venus of Willendorf" sculpture - filtered through Etrog's abstracted bronze lens. Similar sculptures, referred to as "Venus Figurines...

Untitled
By Louise Nevelson
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Caviar20 is excited to be offering this striking collage by the inimitable Louise Nevelson, who is regarded as one of the most original, influential, and successful American sculptors of the 20th century. Nevelson's enduring appeal lies in her distinct visual language, which is apparent in all of her works, regardless of medium. While her iconic monochromatic wood assemblages are instantly recognizable, she continuously experimented with diverse materials, including resin, steel, and bronze, as well as numerous printmaking techniques. Collage was an important part of Nevelson's practice, defining her signature aesthetic. Much like her approach to printmaking, her collages possess a sculptural ethos that transcends the two-dimensional surface, imbuing the composition with a remarkable sense of volume, texture, and depth. One could argue that Nevelson's sculpture was informed by collage in that she took assorted existing forms combining them in order to create an entirely new and distinct arrangement. This untitled collage is an exceptional example of the artist's mastery of the medium. Featuring an assemblage of wood veneer, mirror, and metal, this work reflects Nevelson's meticulous sense of form and rhythm. Subtle details, such as the alternating direction of the wood veneer grain further heighten the visual complexity of the otherwise minimal composition. The inclusion of wood veneer marks a notable shift for Nevelson, who was previously loyal to a strict monochromatic palette of black or white. It wasn’t until the 1970s with her experimentation in collage that she expanded her palette. Nevelson also created jewellery and this collage acknowledges her activity in that realm. Created at the age of 83 during the final chapter of her career, this piece powerfully captures Nevelson's enduring spirit and dedication to artistic innovation. Today Nevelson's work can be found in every major public collection across North America and beyond. Questions about this piece? Contact us. Visit our Toronto gallery on Thursdays or by appointment. Woman in Blue
By Andy Warhol
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Andy Warhol is arguably the most important American artist of the 20th century. In the 1950s, he was an in-demand and celebrated illustrator working for New York's toniest publications (like Harper's Bazaar) and elegant shops (such as Bonwit Teller), in addition to many smaller independent fashion companies. In the mid-1950s Warhol became synonymous with shoes after creating a successful campaign for shoe retailer Miller & Sons. Although Warhol had a parallel art practice, primarily focused on drawing, surpassing the designation of “commercial artist” proved difficult. Consider that this era was the height of popularity for the Abstract Expressionist painters. Despite the prevailing aesthetic, Warhol continued to be dedicated to making elegant or playful line drawings. This untitled illustration is an intimate example of Warhol at his best in the 1950's. It is ambiguous whether this was created for a client, or whether Warhol was inspired by an encounter in real life. With the lightest touch, the artist renders a glamorous woman's profile as she holds a young child in her arms. Unique to this drawing is the subtle presence of the child, who rests gently against the woman's chest in a tender embrace yet is almost entirely abstract. This maternal exchange represents an unexpected deviation from Warhol's typical subject matter, possibly serving as a tribute to his own mother, Julia Warhola, whom he admired deeply. This elegant drawing is a marvellous precursor to Warhol's Pop Art era when he became transfixed by images and representation of women. Questions about this piece? Contact us.
