He abandoned his previous studies as an engineer to begin (1904) studies at the School of Arts and Manufactures in Madrid, and devoted himself to painting. His first works were inspired by the "Jugendstil" (German Art Nouveau movement), which the Madrid art world perceived as a major art form.
