Whether traveling to a foreign land, wandering through a neighborhood marketto shop for food, or engaging in convivial conversation with a friend at his home,David Halliday is easily charmed, intrigued, excited, or amused by all that surroundshim. An artful documenter of life, Haliday uses his camera as a tool for recording themultitudinous special moments that capture his attention. Exhibition-sized painting of Iona Island coast by celebrated Scottish artist Duncan Cameron (1837-1916), this is a large and expansive 19th century landscape oil painting on canvas. Renowned for his landscape paintings, this work captures the natural light on the sea, sand and rocks with splashes of rich color under a big sky.
Iona off the west coast of Scotland, has attracted artists for for its dramatic scenery and northern light, including the Scottish Colourists who favored the fresh pure light. The cliffs and coastal rocks are reminiscent of works by Samuel Peploe and Duncan Fergusson of this fabled island.
In 1876 Cameron won a Gold Medal for landscape painting, at the Crystal Palace exhibition. The year after this painting (circa 1870s) Cameron began exhibiting in the Royal Academy, Society of British Artists, and Royal Scottish Academy, showing his work consistently from 1880. Other venues for exhibiting his work include the Glasgow Institute, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, and the Royal Hibernian Academy. His work is sold today in Fine Art Galleries in the UK and in Saltire Gallerie, USA. His landscape paintings are widely acclaimed, and this landscape painting of considerable size and detail is a fine example. Born in Perthshire, Cameron studied in Dundee and in South Kensington, London. He later died in Edinburgh. The highest auction sale of his work reached nearly 20,000 GBP. He was widely acclaimed as a landscape artist, painting Scottish farmlands and haystacks, coastal scenes and lochs.

In the 1890s William Stott exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, mainly highly decorative works with subjects derived from classical mythology and literature. This painting was Stott's 1895 entry to the Royal Academy and was subsequently exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1896 and then on to the Berlin, VII Internationale Kunstausstellung 1897. Shakespeare was a favourite source for Victorian painters, and the tragic romance of Ophelia, from Hamlet, was an especially popular subject, featuring regularly in the Royal Academy exhibitions.
The most popular and iconic image of Ophelia's death was, and is to this day, John Everett Millais's 1851 painting showing the confused and tragic Ophelia floating downstream on her back in a state of mad ecstasy, arms raised in a gesture of inevitable submission. However, although Stott chose not to pastiche this image, it seems highly likely that he was prompted to take up this subject, which had almost become a 'rite of passage' among Victorian painters, by the fact that in 1894 Millais's Ophelia was presented to the National Gallery of British Art by Sir Henry Tate.

George Lafayette Clough was born September 18, 1824, in Auburn, New York, and was that city's leading landscapist and, known as a Hudson River School painter, became Auburn's most noted resident painter of the mid-century. His mother was widowed shortly after his birth, and he was raised without paternal influence. He had little formal education and was employed by the age of ten. By age fifteen he had taken up painting, and his first and informal art influence came from the portraitist, Randall Palmer.
