Carl Grauer
Backyard Sunset (Contemporary Landscape Oil Painting by Carl Grauer, Framed)

2020

About the Item

"Backyard Sunset" By Carl Grauer Oil on Canvas 20x20 inches, 21 x 21 x 3 inches framed in painted white wood floater frame Signed en verso Artist Carl Grauer expertly and astutely captures the dramatic sunsets so commonly experienced near his home in the Hudson Valley. Striated clouds are illuminated by the setting sun; fiery orange clouds dominate the blue sky in this charming landscape painting on canvas. The unique perspective includes a picket fence and neighborhood rooftops cast in shadow, framing the dramatic summer's eve sky. The painting is framed in custom white wood floater frame that is wired on the reverse for easy installation. Carl Grauer explores spatio-temporal themes in a new body of work started in the autumn of 2020. Like so many of us on lock down riding out the surges of the pandemic, Grauer retreated to nature near his home and studio in Poughkeepsie, NY. He used this time to slow down and mindfully observe the “minutia of leaves, moving clouds, and the time of day giving up its fight for the night”. Describing a new series of landscapes organized by a grid structure, the artist explains “I paint a perspective that tracks change, point of view, and these fourth-dimensional observations on a two-dimensional surface with oils.” Artist Bio: Carl Grauer is a painter based in Poughkeepsie, NY in the beautiful Hudson Valley. He primarily works in oil, painting mostly portraits and figure-based contemporary realistic paintings. Born in rural Kansas, Grauer left to complete his degrees in human biology and his MFA in medical illustration from the University of Kansas and the University of Michigan, respectively. He spent two years in London studying figurative and portrait painting with several studios and has garnered success showing work nationally and internationally, including being shortlisted for the Wells Art Contemporary Award in the U.K., exhibiting with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in London, and having been granted several residencies including the Jentel Artist Residency in Banner, Wyoming. • City Glow: Cityscape Oil Painting of New York City in Pastel Palette
    By Patty Neal
    Located in Hudson, NY
Contemporary cityscape painting of New York City skyline with a light blue and green palette “City Glow”, painted by Patty Neal in 2019 18 x 18 inches on wood panel Wire backing, artist signature located in lower right corner This contemporary oil painting depicting a metropolitan view of New York City was painted by Brooklyn based artist, Patty Neal. Made with gestural impressionistic brushstrokes, this painting offers a view of the Manhattan skyline on a bridge through the window of a passing car. The mint green infastructure compliments the dusty blue and sandy oranges of the city in the background. This piece is traditional of Neal’s work which commonly highlights everyday city scenes, utilitarian infrastructure, and industrial or electrical apparatus. The cityscape scene is completed on wood panel with white painted sides. Artist statement: A life is an accumulation of experiences: visual, emotional and mental. By compartmentalizing these snippets of life we create boundaries. The focus of my work for many years has been the exploration of these various life aspects and how they are bound together or bound from each other. My process is often literally composed of boundaries. I make a painting by putting together multiple panels, or I segment a single panel into separate visual spaces. The works are made up of pieces or elements of city and landscape. While exploring the concepts of boundaries I play with visual “reality.” Sometimes I combine images that are upside down with those that are not and juxtapose images from different contexts. Literal boundaries, such as walls fences, expanses of water and highway median strips are also used. My intent is to invite viewers to look beyond these boundaries to see the possibilities of a connected whole.
