"Condor" Coffee Table by Fredrik Schriever Abeln for Örebro Glas, Sweden, 1960s
By Örebro Glasfabrik, Fredrik Schriever-Abeln
Located in Utrecht, NL
Swedish designer, Fredrik Schriever-Abeln’s designs have become quite sought after only in the past years. This is in part due to the beloved design of this “Condor” table being misattributed to Illum Wikkelsø until recently. The distinctive “X” shaped teak base defines this coffee table holding a glass top. The solid wood base is sculpted to perfection, the level of woodwork and precise joinery technique greatly shows off the skills of the craftsman. The structure is made with minimal joinery, the glass top is held solely by the carved “arms”, while the stretcher is joined to the legs with mortise and tenon joints. The balance of the size of the glass top and wooden parts praise the designer’s vision. The modern aesthetic shows that this table - like the Condor chairs...

Stacklab, 'Mura, ' Contemporary Glass and Bronze Coffee Table, Canada, 2018
By Jeff Goodman, STACKLAB
Located in New York, NY
Mura low table is created in collaboration with Toronto-based glass design and fabrication atelier Jeff Goodman Studio (JGS). It pairs STACKLAB’s signature solid-bronze Jupiter leg castings with a droplet-shaped top of kiln-fused Temple glass. The table’s name derives from the Japanese word for “unevenness, irregularity, inequality” Temple glass is a handmade product invented by JGS for the Bahá’í Temple of South America, capable of withstanding the rigorous weather fluctuations and seismic activity of the Andes mountains near Santiago, Chile. In the proprietary fabrication process, rods of glass are broken. The glass fragments are arranged in the kiln bed in JGS’s randomized River Rock pattern, then fired and cooled for a week. This process yields a distinctive mottled motif of milky translucent veils within a transparent field. The slab is polished, then cut to size with a water jet. Because the glass is handmade, each table top takes three weeks to carve and polish, a process that is impossible to duplicate, making each Mura table unique. “Our studios share a love of controlled, but partially unknown, outcomes,” says STACKLAB Founder and Creative Director Jeffrey Forrest. “Our disciplined methods allow us to ‘let go’ as we approach the finish line and observe what happens, from a careful arrangement of glass rods settling in the kiln to a computer code interpreting inputs about form.” “STACKLAB came to us with the idea of shaping the edge of Temple glass with a beautiful ribbon line,” says JGS Executive Director Sylvia Lee. “This is the first piece we’ve done in carved, sculptural Temple glass; earlier applications were always with straight edges. STACKLAB is helping push us into exploring the material more deeply and at a large scale. That’s exciting.” As for the Jupiter leg, it is a study in creating a completely asymmetrical, yet aesthetically cohesive, geometry. The shape is readily castable, yet differs in every elevation, section and plan view. The sand-casting process produces faintly perceptible irregularities that enhance the leg’s tactile appeal. The planetary name pays homage to the subtitle of Mozart’s last symphony, a favorite of the client who commissioned the first Jupiter table...

Guillerme et Chambron, Oak & Smoked Glass Coffee Table, France, Mid-Century
By Guillerme et Chambron, Votre Maison
Located in New York, NY
Robert Guillerme studied design and architecture at the École Boule, graduating in 1934. After the Second World War he moved to Lille, in the north of France, where he decorated homes and designed furniture for the well regarded Rogier workshops. In 1948 Jacques Chambron left his work as a painter and decorator on the Rue Nollet in Paris, and relocated his family to join Guillerme. The two had met in 1940 while imprisoned by the Germans in East Prussia and bonded over, among other more obvious things, their shared passion for design. In 1949 the pair discovered Émile Dariosecq, a master cabinet maker who had a shop in the city, and who was willing to produce their designs. The three started Votre Maison. The association was destined to be as influential as prolific. Not only did Votre Maison produce over two thousand models during the later half of the twentieth century, it also left an indelible stamp on design of the 50s, 60s and 70s. The company’s output served as a model for a vast field of livable contemporaneous design. The soul of Guillerme et Chambron’s work was in the company’s name (“Your House"). Their focus was as keenly attuned to functionality—furniture’s use in daily life—as to the creation of innovative design. For the pair of designers the home was envisioned as a place where the family could live both comfortably and in aesthetic harmony. Robert Guillerme, who designed most of the work, possessed a limitless creative ambition, producing designs for everything from grand dressers and sideboards to the smallest elements of a space, such as pedestals, shelving, benches, and lighting. This steady output of beautiful furniture bucked convention not merely in the equal emphasis Guillerme placed on function and aesthetics, but in the almost paradoxical creation...

Giulio Lazzotti Megeia coffee table pair Italy 1979
By Giulio Lazzotti
Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant
Nice pair of coffee tables by Gulio Lazzotti and manufactured by Megeia, italy 1979. The base consists of four marble columns with beautiful cut lining. Three black and one white. Two black columns are shaped like half a cylinder. The other two are two cylinders with a diameter which perfectly fits in the half parts, a nice visual detail. The bases can be put in a playful position to your wishes. The large square tops are from thick glass. The tables are in excellent condition. Priced and sold in a set of 2. This Postmodern design resembles the relationship between ancient masonry skills and applying these traditions in modern forms. Like some other Italian designers, Lazzotti in particular has an innovative approach towards experimenting with form, especially in stone and marble, and applying these mainly into tables. Giulio Lazzotti is an Italian designer and architect who has always given an important place to objects’s sculptural dimension. A great lover of marble, his work is modern, reconciliating a sense of craftsmanship with industrial production. Often hired as a consultant for his experience, Giulio shares his attention to detail throughout the world and collaborates with major furniture brands. The name of the town where Giulio Lazzotti lives and works, Pietrasanta, can be alternately translated as Saint Peter or “holy stone,” the latter being wholly appropriate for a designer and architect whose work in marble, metal and wood takes on a serene, sculptural presence. Lazzotti was educated at the prestigious University of Florence, where he later returned to teach architecture. Since 1975, Lazzotti has maintained a diverse practice encompassing architecture, interior design and furniture design, winning such awards as first prize for Design at the Moving Fair of Paris, the Torre Guinigi prize in Lucca for Urban Design for the historical center of Pietrasanta, a top ten in the International Chair...
