Last month, Tyla made headlines when she wore an archival 1990s Chanel top as a very tiny dress to the MTV Video Music Awards. Well, she didn’t quite get her Chanel fix with just that one outfit. In the music video for her latest single, “Chanel,” the pop star dons a variety of garments from the titular French fashion house. Her stylist, Ron Hartleben, recently told Vogue how he assembled the looks for the video.

Hartleben performed an extensive search for the most memorable Chanel pieces from the 1990s, pulling from private collections and working with vintage sellers, including 1stDibs dealer Vintage Heritage. The Fall 1993 gold revolver was a particularly noteworthy find, receiving its moment in the spotlight at the top of the video, when Tyla points it straight at the camera.

“I wanted to find the craziest things for her to wear, and pay homage to those key moments: Karl [Lagerfeld]’s hip-hop collection, those Peter Lindbergh photos with Linda [Evangelista], and amalgamate them into one modern thing that made sense for Tyla,” Hartleben told Vogue. The only clothing item in the video’s four ensembles that isn’t Chanel is the Hanes tank top the singer wears in one of the black-and-white scenes. Everything else — the belts, the shoes and even her undergarments — are all by the designer.

Although the emphasis was on ’90s pieces, the infamous extra-large Hula Hoop handbag from Spring/Summer 2013 makes an appearance. “I kept telling Tyla about the pieces she’d wear, how iconic they were or how crazy everyone has been going over them since forever, these things people went crazy for on Tumblr when we were growing up,” Hartleben told Vogue. “I was like, for you to hold this bag is going to be a huge deal for people.”
