An appreciation for Y2K fashion is not new, but this year, both fashion designers and the seriously stylish have zeroed in on the turn-of-the-millennium’s best handbags.
The fixation arguably started with the revival of the Takashi Murakami Louis Vuitton partnership at the beginning of this year, more than two decades after Marc Jacobs, then artistic director of LV, hired the artist to redesign the heritage brand’s monogram, in 2003.
That was followed by the rerelease of Fendi’s Baguette, which debuted in 1997 and remained popular into the noughties. More recently, both Celine’s Phantom tote, introduced in 2011, and the Paddington bag by Chloé, launched in 2005, have staged returns.
Regardless of what’s on the runways right now, plenty of iconic early-2000s designs are waiting to be rediscovered on the resale market, from the bulky Balenciaga City bag to the playful Dior Saddle bag.
