When you think of a skirt suit, you might envision women in slightly regrettable ensembles working in 1980s corporate offices (or the movie Working Girl). But lately, young stars have been demonstrating that the style isn’t stuck in that fluorescent-lit scenario, as Vogue reports. Whether in archival looks or new designs, the skirt suit is an intriguing counterpoint to the trend toward women in menswear.
Kendall Jenner has appeared several times in skirt suits, sporting on one occasion a particularly playful red archival Thierry Mugler ensemble with peplum detailing and, on another, a very “office siren” gray-wool Alberta Ferretti outfit. Hailey Bieber, ever the archival Mugler fan, wore a Fall 1998 pinstriped suit by the designer on a recent date with husband Justin Bieber.
Chase Sui Wonders, meanwhile, has worn two skirt suits on her press tour for Apple TV+’s The Studio. The Sandy Liang and Patou numbers both lean away from office dress code with their short hemlines.
Sometimes, a skirt suit makes a splash by evoking a period before the style’s ’80s heyday. The Schiaparelli outfit worn by Mikey Madison and the Chanel number modeled by Lily-Rose Depp certainly make that case.
