EKATERINA POPOVA (b. 1988, Russia)
Ekaterina Popova was born in Vladimir, Russia. After moving to the United States, she fell in love with painting and received a BFA from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. Her work has been exhibited nationally, including The Painting Center in New York, The Trenton City Museum, Delaware Contemporary, Uforge Gallery, The Painted Bride Center, The Boxheart Gallery, A.I.R. Gallery and more.
Popova has been featured in multiple blogs and publications, including Aesthetica, The Jealous Curator, Professional Artist Magazine, Studio Visit Magazine, Iceview and The Philadelphia Inquirer. The young artist recently finished an artist in residency at Centre Pompadour in Abbeville, France. She has also participated in residencies in Iceland and Greece, through the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts.
Ekaterina Popova works out of her studio in Philadelphia, PA, and is represented by the DECORAZON Gallery.
Artist Statement For the past few years, I have been exploring interiors in my work. The interest started as a way for me to reflect on my upbringing in Russia, but eventually progressed to exploring the overall idea of “home” and what it means to me now.
The work has slowly evolved from being reflective and sentimental to being mindful and present in my current environment. I repeatedly paint my own bedroom, visit other people’s houses, and use reference photos submitted to me by others online. My paintings include messy rooms, intimate items, and objects that refer to human presence without including the figure. I pick up on the subtle tones, lighting, and mood of each location in order to capture the emotion I associate with the space and then exaggerate the colour to create a dream-like image.to

Judith Sobel was born in Lwow Poland in 1924. After World War II, she attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz, Poland. There she studied with the famous abstract constructionists, Wladyslaw Strzeminski and Stefan Wegner from whom she learned the principles of Modern Art as laid down by the European Cubists. Sobel’s work was selected for the First Exhibit of Modern Art Museum Krakow in 1948-49. Judith Sobel emigrated to the newly found Israel where she lived for five years, becoming very active in Israel’s emerging art world. Her work was collected and exhibited by the major art museums of Israel including the Museum of Modern Art at Haifa; her art was regularly shown in the Israeli galleries.
