Fontana Arte Furniture

Best known for its elegant and innovative vintage lighting fixtures, the Milan-based firm Fontana Arte pioneered one of the key features of 20th-century and contemporary Italian design: the union of artistry and industry wrought by partnerships between creative talents — chiefly architects — and entrepreneurial businesses. Fontana Arte is further distinguished by having had as artistic director, in succession, four of Italy’s most inventive modernist designers: Gio Ponti, Pietro Chiesa, French transplant Max Ingrand and Gae Aulenti.

The bread and butter of the glassmaking company that Luigi Fontana founded in 1881 was plate-glass panels for the construction industry. In 1930, Fontana met Ponti — then the artistic director of the Richard Ginori ceramics workshop and the editor of the influential magazine Domus — at a biannual design exhibition that became the precursor to today’s Milan Design Triennale, and the two hatched an idea for a furniture and housewares firm. Fontana Arte was incorporated in 1932 with Ponti as its chief of design. He contributed several lamps that remain among the company’s signature works, including the orb-atop-cone Bilia table lamp and the 0024 pendant — a stratified hanging sphere.

The following year, Fontana Arte partnered with the influential Milan studio glassmaker and retailer Pietro Chiesa, who took over as artistic director. Chiesa’s designs for lighting — as well as for tables and items including vases and ashtrays — express an appreciation for fluidity and simplicity of line, as seen in works such as his flute-shaped Luminator floor lamp and the 1932 Fontana table — an arched sheet of glass that is held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.

Six years after Chiesa’s 1948 death, the École des Beaux Arts–trained Max Ingrand took over as head of design at Fontana Arte. Ingrand brought a similarly expressive formal sensibility to wares such as lamps and mirrors, but he also had a masterful eye for the manipulation of glass surfaces — whether they be cut, frosted, acid-etched or sand-blasted. His classic design is the Fontana table lamp of 1954, which has a truncated cone shade and curved body, both of which are made of pure, chic white-frosted glass.

Following Ingrand, the often-audacious Italian architect Gae Aulenti served as the company’s artistic director from 1979 to 1996, and while she generally insisted that furnishings take second place aesthetically to architecture, she made an exception for Fontana Arte pieces such as the Tavolo con Ruote series of glass coffee and dining tables on wheels, bold lighting pieces such as the Parola series and the Giova, a combination flower vase and table lamp. As a key incubator of modern design under Aulenti’s tenure, Fontana Arte remained true to its long-held commitment — creating objects that have never been less than daring.

Fontana Arte 1960 Italy Milan Very Rare Table Desk Lamp In Glass And Hardware
By Fontana Arte, Max Ingrand
Located in Miami, FL
Geometric table lamp designed by Fontana Arte. An extraordinary piece of Italian decorative arts, created in Milano by Fontana Arte, back in the 1960. Crafted with translucent cut glass and nickeled steel. The main body is composed by two rectangular beveled pieces of greenish glass carved with incused circles and frosted finishes. Fontana-Arte FontanaArte is an Italian company founded in Milan in 1932 by Luigi Fontana and Giò Ponti (1891-1979). The company is known for the processing of curved glass and for the production of lighting equipment, becoming over the years a prominent name for Italian design. Fontana-Arte marked the “history of light and furnishings” in Italy and worldwide. Born of the idea of an architect, the company has always kept strong ties with the design world, gradually involving leading Italian and international architects and lighting designers. With them, the company has created a true cultural project of architecture, lighting and furniture. This design culture, mainly involving fine materials (above all glass), has seen interaction between technology and aesthetic appeal as its main focus, generating a series of timeless objects, with splendid shapes, some of which have become design classics, exhibited in leading museums around the world. Giò Ponti invites Pietro Chiesa (1892 – 1942) to join him in the art direction. Chiesa is a distinguished glass master who enlists the craftsmen from his own workshop to join him to the company. Gio Ponti designed the 0024 pendant lamp and the Bilia table lamp in 1931. Pietro Chiesa‘s most famous lamp at that time is the Luminator, designed in 1933, in 1937 the 006. In 1954, Max Ingrand, a French glass master and decorator, renowned for his stunning stained-glass church windows, becomes the art director. He designed the Fontana table lamp. Gio Ponti becomes again art director in 1967 and he designs a new collection of lamps, the Pirellina and Pirellone table...

Fontana Arte "Optunia" Cast Glass Table Lamp by Claesson Koivisto Rune
By Fontana Arte, Claesson Koivisto Rune
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Optunia" is a wall lamp, designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune and manufactured by FontanaArte, featuring a structure in cast aluminum, available with paints in white, onyx or glossy black nickel-plated colors. The price of this lamp reflects the white finish. Please inquire for pricing on additional colors. Molded cast glass, frosted and painted from behind, working as a diffuser. Base in painted metal. Power source housed in the base for the wall and ceiling versions, in the breadboard for the hanging version or onto a peg in the table version. It can be provided with a dimmer and lighting sources are 2 x 11W LED (3000K, CRI>80, Lumen 1384 + 1384). Dimensions: Ø 5.1" (discs), D. 9.8", H. 10.3" "Optunia" is a collection of lighting elements available in four variants for tabletop (with or without stem), floor, wall and ceiling. Its functionality lies in the possibility of rotating the two discs that make up the nearly 360 degrees head, opening up an extraordinary number of lighting combinations. The lower disc rotates on one axis, while the upper disk simultaneously rotates on a second axis, perpendicular to the first. This double movement gives "Optunia" the advantages of both direct and indirect light emission, exploiting the surface of the wall or ceiling to produce a soft light. Complementing its functionality, the design of such lamp is reminiscent of a form found in nature: the two disks resemble the pads of the prickly pear called "Opuntia ficus-indica", from which the lamp takes its name. A collection of exceptional technical sophistication, whose form is further emphasized by its colors: opaque white, bold and clean, dark mirrored chrome, recalling the preciousness of metal, a darker shade resembling onyx and quartz color, shifting from dark brown to black. Claesson Koivisto Rune is a Swedish architectural partnership, founded in Stockholm in 1995 by Marten Claesson, Eero Koivisto and Ola Rune. It started as an architectural firm, but has since become an internationally acclaimed and multi-disciplinary office with an equal emphasis on both architecture and design. They were the first Swedish office exhibiting in the international section at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2004, they are also responsible for award-wining projects such as the Tind Prefab house collection for Fiskarhedenvillan, Widlund House private villa on Öland, Örsta Gallery building in Kumla, Sfera Building culture house in Kyoto and Nobis Hotel in Stockholm. They design for well known international companies such as Arflex, Asplund, Blueair, Boffi, Capdell, Cappellini, Casamania, David design, Discipline, Dune NY...

Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte brass opaline glass chandelier 1955
By Max Ingrand, Fontana Arte
Located in Paris, IDF
This brass and opal glass chandelier, designed by Max Ingrand for the iconic Italian lighting manufacturer Fontana Arte, dates back to 1955. Crafted with noble materials and clean lines, this piece reminiscent of a butterfly bowtie epitomises mid-century Italian furniture. The lampshade consists of four curved opal glass blades joining at the center of the chandelier, each half-encased in delicate brass. This blend of materials produces a sophisticated and diffused light, fostering a welcoming ambiance in any interior. This chandelier has been fully restored and electrified, and is found in a beautiful condition, ready to enlighten any space. Literature : Vitrum, n. 100, February 1958, page 38. Max Ingrand (1908-1968), French master glassmaker and designer, began his journey in the art of stained glass at Jacques Grüber's workshop. Trained at the Beaux-Arts and the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs, he initially restored stained glass windows destroyed during the war and fulfilled state commissions. After World War II, he reopened his workshop in Paris, emerging as a prodigy of light and transparency, as well as a talented designer. As the artistic director of the prestigious Italian lighting manufacturer Fontana Arte from 1954 until his death in 1967, he crafted iconic lighting fixtures...
