James Montgomery Flagg Prints and Multiples

American, 1877-1960

James Montgomery Flagg was a prodigious illustrator, working as a contributing artist to Life magazine at the surprisingly young age of 14. Flagg was born on June 18, 1877, in the Village of Pelham. He is most famous for creating the first image of the fictional Uncle Sam. His ‘I Want You’ lithographed image of Uncle Sam was published in 1917, during the First World War. It is storied that Flagg used his own image as the model for Uncle Sam, imagining himself as a much older man and with facial hair. Flagg died on May 27, 1960, in New York.

By James Montgomery Flagg
Located in Spokane, WA
I Am Telling You, On June 28th I expect you to enlist. James Montgomery Flagg, WW1 original vintage World War 1 poster. This I Am Telling You poster shows Uncle Sam with hands on his hips. James Montgomery Flagg must have thought he was in a rut, having to recreate his bearded self portrait for poster after poster. The public never tired of his (Uncle Sam) image. The appearance of the stern looking icon on walls and hoardings across the country never failed to fill the government’s coffers. Despite their modest cost, the war stamps promoted on this poster eventually raised over one billion dollars! [excerpted from Heritage auction catalogue #613] This is the most "budget priced" of the WWI James M Flagg...
