Tony Minartz Art

French, 1873-1944
Antoine Guillaume (Tony) Minartz (1870-1944) was a self-taught painter. He created a significant body of work, particularly of skilfully rendered sketches and watercolours, which may be divided into two main series: Parisian life and society, and landscapes of the Côte-d’Azur. On the Côte-d’Azur, his sketches trace an itinerary between St-Tropez and Cannes, by way of Nice and Monaco, and extending even to Venice. He depicted ports crowded with yachts and other boats, the beaches and their pleasant bustle. The Parisian subjects mostly date from pre-WWI, while the post-WWI subjects tend to be of fashionable life on the Côte d’Azur. He was most known for his interpretations of Parisian life, of the Belle Époque through to the excesses of the 1930s. He illustrated the vicissitudes of society life, and was a faithful chronicler of its parties, the casino, cabaret, circus shows and their backstage goings-on, the music-hall, the Opéra and its ballets. He showed in collective exhibitions from 1896 to 1914, most notably at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, of which he became an associate member in 1901.

Le Fil d'Ariane (Ariadne's Clew) /// Modern Surrealism Surrelist Andre Masson
By André Masson
Located in Saint Augustine, FL
Artist: André Masson (French, 1896-1987) Title: "Le Fil d'Ariane (Ariadne's Clew)" Portfolio: For Meyer Schapiro *Signed by Masson in pencil lower right Year: 1973 Medium: Original Etching with Aquatint on Rives BFK paper Limited edition: 15/100 Printer: Atelier Crommelynck, Paris, France Publisher: The Committee to Endow a Chair in Honor of Meyer Schapiro at Columbia University, New York, NY Sheet size: 18" x 13.5" Image size: 11.5" x 8.5" Condition: Never framed, has been professionally stored away for decades. In excellent condition Rare Notes: Numbered by Masson in pencil lower left. Comes from the 1974 "For Meyer Schapiro" portfolio of twelve print editions by various artists. The "For Meyer Schapiro" portfolio consisted of four lithographs (one with embossing), three screenprints (one with stamp additions), two lithographs and screenprints (one with embossing), two etching and aquatints, and one duplicated drawing. Various printers were used. In addition to Masson, the following artists also contributed to the portfolio: Stanley William Hayter, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Alexander Liberman, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Motherwell, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Saul Steinberg, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol. Biography: André Masson (b. Balagny-sur-Thérain 1896 - Paris 1987) was a French artist. He was brought up in Belgium. He began his study of art at the age of eleven in Brussels, at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts under the guidance of Constant Montald, and later he studied in Paris. He fought for France during World War I and was seriously injured. His early works display an interest in cubism. He later became associated with surrealism, and he was one of the most enthusiastic employers of automatic drawing, making a number of automatic works in pen and ink. Masson experimented with altered states of consciousness with artists such as Antonin Artaud, Michel Leiris, Joan Miró, Georges Bataille, Jean Dubuffet, and Georges Malkine, who were neighbors of his studio in Paris. By the end of the 1920s, however, he was finding automatic drawing rather restricting, and he left the surrealist movement and turned instead to a more structured style, often producing works with a violent or erotic theme, and making a number of paintings in reaction to the Spanish Civil War. Under the German occupation of France during World War II, his work was condemned by the Nazis as degenerate. With the assistance of Varian Fry in Marseille, Masson escaped the Nazi regime on a ship to the French island...

Modern British Surrealist Abstract Bold Color Aquatint Etching Print Yellow Eye
By Alistair Grant
Located in Surfside, FL
Alistair Grant was a familiar feature of the London art scene. Best known as a printmaker, his entire teaching career was spent in the printmaking department at the Royal College of Art, where he was to become Professor. Over the years he taught printmaking to many who were to become leading UK artists. Grant was at the top of his profession and a groundbreaker in his explorations of mixed media techniques. Grant was also a wonderful painter. In the early 1980s his imagery had turned to an open expressionist style, with sweeping brush marks and the introduction of new vibrant colour. Inspired by the Normandy coastline around Etaples and Le Touquet. Grant would create cyphers from the shapes and forms in the landscape, which he would offset against curtains of colour. They evoke bright or misty days, blazing skies or sunsets, beaches or harbours. The paintings and prints are descriptions of places he loved and constantly returned to. One could describe him as a French reflection of the St. Ives School where painters explored the landscape in similar fashion, as they still do. There is a wonderful sense of freedom in these images, and a great joie de vivre. Grant was a supreme colourist. He also co-authored an important book on the life and works of fellow English artist Henry Moore, whom his abstract figurative style resembles. This print is from the late 1960s and show the strong influence of figurative abstraction and surrealist elements in his work. Although best known as a printmaker, Grant also painted throughout his career and in the 1980s he adopted an expressionist style using vibrant colours. He was born in London and studied at Birmingham College of Art (1941-43). After serving during the war, Grant returned to art school and the Royal College, where he was taught by Carel Weight and Ruskin Spear. Grant was to work in the printmaking department of the Royal College for 35 years (1955-90), ending his career as Emeritus Professor of Printmaking at the RA. He showed with Julian Trevelyan. Grant showed at the Royal Academy, Artists International Association, and New English Art Club, and was a prize-winner at the Krakow Print Biennale in 1972. The TATE, The Victoria & Albert Museum, British provincial and many overseas galleries hold Grant’s work. His work is amongst the finest of modern British printmaking alongside richard smith, joe tilson, peter blake, patrick caulfield, alan davie, terry frost, david hockney and howard hodgkin.
