A fine and impressive antique Victorian sterling silver three piece tea service/set; part of our Victorian silver teaware collection. This fine antique Victorian sterling silver three piece tea set consists of a teapot, sugar bowl and cream jug / creamer. Each piece has an inverted pear shaped form on to a domed spreading foot. The upper portion of each piece is embellished with a broad band of bright cut engraved interlacing scroll and leaf decoration accented with stylised shell designs. The decoration to the body of each component incorporates two shaped, scroll decorated cartouches: one of which is vacant, the other displaying a bright cut engraved crest of a talbot*. The teapot is fitted with a hinged domed cover encircled with a band of bright cut engraved strapwork style decoration. The cover retains the original and impressive, hallmarked cast sterling silver stemmed floral finial. The fine teapot spout is ornamented with concave fluted decoration to the lower portion in addition to scrolling leaf designs extending up to the lip. The teapot, cream jug and sugar bowl are all fitted with impressive C scroll handles ornamented with acanthus leaf decorated thumbpieces. The raised border is embellished with an impressive bright cut engraved marital coat of arms incorporating the motto 'Tria juncta in uno', three joined in one. The rim of each antique second course dish is encircled with a Fine and impressive applied gadroon decorated border accented with alternating scrolling leaf designs. The circular well of each plate is plain and unembellished. The underside of each plate retains the silversmith's center punch mark in addition to the original item numbers 9, 10 and 12 and the original scratch weight of 32 troy ounces and 4 pennyweights (32.2 troy ounces), as to be expected the measured weight has subtly diminished in keeping with age to 29.9 troy ounces. The components of this magnificent set have been realistically modelled in the form of squirrels eating nuts. Each substantial piece is ornamented with details reproducing the squirrel's fur and anatomical features. The fine mustard pot is fitted the original hallmarked flush hinged cover, incorporating the rodent's arms and head, and retains the original gilding to the interior; the flush hinge and gilding indicates the high quality of the piece. The decoration to each squirrel pepper incorporates an array of pierced 'pepper' holes to the upper portion. The underside of each pepperette is fitted with a hinged hallmarked push fit cover.
