The Gaze, Signed Graphite 20th Century Portrait
Located in London, GB
Graphite on paper, signed bottom right Image size: 13 x 8 3/4 inches (33 x 22.25 cm) Original frame Dora Thacher Clarke, later Dora Middleton, (1895–1989) was a British sculptor and wood carver who also wrote about, and promoted African art. Clarke was born in Harrow in Middlesex. Her father, Joseph Thacher Clarke was an American architect. Clarke won a scholarship that allowed her to attend the Slade School of Fine Art. Aged fifteen, Clarke initially studied at the Slade on a part-time basis for three days each week throughout 1910 and 1911 but during 1915 and 1916 she studied sculpture there as a full-time student. Clarke first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1923 and continued to do so until 1959. In the early 1930s she was a regular exhibitor in group shows at the Goupil Gallery and in March 1937 had her first solo show at the French Gallery. She also exhibited at the Paris Salon and with the Royal Society of British Artists. Clarke's works included bronze castings, memorials and wood sculptures, often of African heads. For example she was commissioned to sculpt the posthumous portrait bust of Sir Walter Morley Fletcher. The most notable of her memorials is the panel and medallion tribute to Joseph Conrad at Bishopsbourne in Kent, which was unveiled in 1927. Clarke also wrote about, and promoted African art and spent a year, between 1927 and 1928 in Kenya, where she made many drawings which when she returned to London she used as the basis for wood carvings and bronzes of tribal figures. Wood carving became her technique of choice, often working with hardwoods and, on occasion, sperm whale teeth. Clarke married Admiral Gervase B Middleton in 1938 but rarely exhibited work under her married name. During World War II, Clarke was commissioned by the War Artists' Advisory Committee to produce a portrait medallion depicting a serviceman who had been awarded the George Cross. This proved to be the only portrait medallion acquired for the WAAC collection. Sculptures by Clarke are held in various museums, including the Ashmolean Museum which also holds a 1936 portrait of her by Orovida Camille Pissarro.

A View Near Redhill, 19th Century Pen and Ink Drawing by Samuel Palmer
By Samuel Palmer (b.1805)
Located in London, GB
Pen and ink on paper, inscribed 'Redhill' and dated 'June 24th 1872' lower left Image size: 4 x 8 inches (10 x 20 cm) Mounted and Framed Provenance Given to Ernest Pearce by Carlos Peacock, from the collection of Miss Louisa Twining (1820-1911), a pupil of Samuel Palmer. Carlos noted in his letter accompanying the work to Ernest Pearce that 'Going through my Palmer things for mounting the other day. I found this little sketch dating from the Redhill days. Thought you might like it by way of a Christmas gift'. Literature Carlos Peacock, Samuel Palmer , Shoreham and After, published by John Baker 1968, illustrated on page 67. This delicate pen and ink drawing depicts a view at Redhill, a town in the borough of Reigate within the county of Surrey, England. While Palmer's reputation rests mainly on his Shoreham work some of his later work, such as his sketches from Redhill, have recently received more appreciation. In 1872 Palmer was living in Redhill, at his last home, The Chantry at Cronks Hill. The Chantry is now Grade II listed due to the Palmer connection and Palmer Close, a cul-de-sac in Redhill (built in the 1960's), was also named in his honour. This work is an illustration of rural paradise, a vision of the natural world where there is a cosmic harmony between man and his environment. Indeed, Alfred Palmer, the artist's son, wrote 'Had the artist depended for his material solely on the fields, and woods, and hills around him, and had he used that material in a sordid way, he might have given us faithful representations of those he selected, but there would have been inevitable repetition, and he would never have shown us as he has undoubtedly done, the very spirit and quintessence of the loveliest and most poetic pastoral scenery - scenery which we may imagine as that of ancient England...

Portrait of a Young Officer, Thomas Lawrence, Irish Volunteers
By Sir Thomas Lawrence
Located in London, GB
Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA 1769-1830 Portrait of a Young Officer Pastel with touches of black chalk on paper Signed and inscribed on an old label verso: "Be pleased to keep away / from the Damp & from dust / T Lawrence AE 13. / 1783." Wash mount and gilt frame Provenance W.E. Spooner; Anonymous sale, Phillips London, 17 April 2000 lot 196 Sothebys, Old Master & Early British Paintings, 14 April 2011 • London Lot 246 Old label verso describes how this was drawn in 1783 at the age of 14! This is a portrait of an officer from the Irish Volunteers. The Irish Volunteers was a part-time military force raised by local initiative in Ireland in 1778. Their original purpose was to guard against invasion and to preserve law and order at a time when British soldiers were withdrawn from Ireland to fight abroad during the American Revolutionary War. As a young boy Thomas Lawrence lived with his parents who ran a coaching inn near Bath. Clearly talented from this young age, he drew the passing travellers who stopped at the inn and this soldier may have been one such sitter. Lawrence was only 13 years old when he drew this work. To capitalise upon their son's talents, the family later moved to Bath and sent Lawrence to London in 1787 where he entered the Royal Academy schools at the earliest possible age. Works from such an early period of Lawrence's creativity are rarely to be found today. This rare early portrait drawn in Bath shows the level of technical skill that Lawrence had reached at 14 years old. His use of colour and tone to depict flesh and all the subtle variations in the texture and pigmentation of his sitter’s face, powdered hair and clothes show how Lawrence conceived pastel as a form of painting and partly explains how he could have made the smooth transition to oil painting so soon afterwards. When he arrived in Bath from Devizes in 1780, eleven-year-old Thomas Lawrence (1769–1830) was promoted as a natural-born genius like his Renaissance predecessor Raphael. The local press announced the arrival of the boy wonder and his ‘Striking Sketches’, inviting the ‘Nobility and Gentry’ to sit for their portraits. Thomas Lawrence was a prodigious portraitist from the age of just eight, when he began to draw his first portraits in pencil...

Study for Last Sleep of Arthur in Avalon
Located in London, GB
Graphite on paper Image size: 7 1/2 x 9 inches (19 x 23 cm) Carved gilt frame Literature Illustrated in Malcolm Bell's 'Sir Edward Burne-Jones, A Record and Review', London, 1899, p.127. Provenance Major Charles Sydney Goldman 1958 By descent to his Sons John and Margaret Monck (John Goldman Monck) 1958-1963 Commander Victor Robert Penryn Monck (Victor Robert Penryn Monk Goldman) 1958-1963 Christie's London (Christie, Manson and Woods) 1963, John Monck and Cmdr Penryn Monck sale 26 April 1963 part lot 71 Sir John Richardson, 2019 Burne-Jones decided that the folds in the drapery in this study were too complex for the final painting and fairly soon after he simplified the draperies. The work is a drapery study for the seated figures at the centre of Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones monumental The Sleep of Arthur in Avalon (Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico). The artist spent seventeen years working on the complex narrative, even moving his studio to a larger space to accommodate the canvas. Born as a commission from his patron George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle, to decorate a wall in his library at Naworth Castle, The Sleep of Arthur in Avalon was left unfinished in Burne-Jones’ studio upon his death. The work was bequeathed to a studio neighbour whose descendants sold it at auction in 1963, where it was purchased by Luis A. Ferré, politician and founder of the Museo de Arte de Ponce. To his friends and family, Burne-Jones was known for his 'unpainted masterpieces'. Indeed, from his youth he made swift sketches, such as this study, that appeared effortless in contrast to his carefully crafted paintings and allowed him to work out ideas and refine details. He also drew outside of the studio, and his contemporaries remarked at his uncanny ability to do so while fully engaged in other activities. The painter W. Graham...

Head of a Young Woman
Located in London, GB
Karl Parsons English 1884 - 1934 Head of a Young Woman Graphite on paper Signed and dated '(19)07' lower left Image size: 6 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches (16 x 21.5 cm) Contemporary Pre-Raphaelite style frame One of Britain's leading stained glass designers during the early decades of the 20th century, Karl Parsons drew portraits invariably for pleasure rather than commissions, throughout his life, and it is in these that one sees most clearly the influence of some of the artists whom he most admired, notably Botticelli, Rossetti and Burne-Jones. Though harkening back to these illustrious forebears, both technically and compositionally, this portrait also epitomises the type of portraiture that was fashionable in British high society at the start of the 20th century. Karl Parson's technique here, with delicate shading and strong outlines, is certainly comparable to Gerald Leslie Brockhurst's graphic style. It is clear that Parsons took delight in demonstrating his skill at sculpting human forms through gentle shading. Karl Parsons was an English stained glass artist associated with the arts and craft movement. Parsons was born in Peckham in Surrey in 1884, the 12th child of Arthur William Parsons...

View Across a Lake, 19th Century British School Watercolour
Located in London, GB
British School 19th Century View across a lake Watercolour, monogrammed & dated ’02’ lower right Image size: 11 3⁄4 x 17 3⁄4 inches Framed This ethereal landscape certainly draws upon the nineteenth century European Romantic tradition. THIS WORK IS PART OF OUR CURRENT EXHIBITION 'MOONLIGHT IN PAINTINGS AND WATERCOLOURS' CURRENTLY SHOWING AT DARNLEY FINE ART...
