Original artwork for a LMS poster. The London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) was a British railway company that was formed in 1923 and operated until 1948. At the time it was the world's largest transport organisation, by 1938 it operated 6,870 miles of railway serving routes in England, Norther Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
This painting depicts Solomon's Temple, a Victorian folly on the summit of Grin Low hill near the spa town of Buxton, in the Peak District. Only a few of the stones from the early 19th century original structure remain but the tower was rebuilt in 1988 by public subscription. This new structure consists of a 20-foot-high Grade II listed two-storey tower whose open top provides 360-degree views over the town of Buxton and the surrounding countryside of the Peak District.
