Artist, Designer, Painter, Poet, Sculptor Paul Showalter was born in Pasadena, California in 1940. Paul studied art and design at Pasadena City College, and later received a full scholarship to study at the renowned Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts) and Otis Art Institute (now Otis-Parson) in Los Angeles, majoring in Advertising Design and Illustration. In 1966, Paul Showalter founded the Graphics and Communication Department at the new Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the first major art museum in Los Angeles, setting high standards of museum graphics throughout Southern California. At the 1970 World's Fair in Osaka, Japan, Paul was nominated for Best Animated Short Film for his film titled "The Moon Step." In 1974, Paul founded his own commercial graphic design firm, which specialized in the design of corporate identity programs, exhibition graphics, illustration, and print communications. Today's featured work is a watercolor and black-and-white ink piece entitled "Rocket Launch," which has a landscape layout that ingeniously facilitates storytelling - A highly humorist piece -. signed and dated 2021.
The quality of the drawing, the simplified lines, and the extremely elaborate organization of the elements deliver a reading from left to right and from right to left of a rocket that seems to have taken off. On the left, the main character is a cosmonaut who ultimately did not participate in the “intergalactic trip.” His mouth is represented by a simple hyphen, two wide-open eyes like marbles, and the hilarious double presence of a horseshoe that will not be enough to protect him from his fears and give him enough confidence to board the rocket.
It's astounding with what economy of details Brennan brings to life the cosmonaut's dilemma: “Should I board the rocket or stay on solid ground?” By creating a back-and-forth effect from left to right, Brennan brings the "I'm going, I'm not going" dilemma of the cosmonaut to humorous life, with his helmet glued to his knees.
Brennan pays an amazing tribute to all the great illustrators who have been contributors to major magazines, such as Art Spiegelman for the New Yorker, demonstrating his astonishing ability to activate a whole tragicomic aspect in a single image.

This framed reproduction of Claude Monet's immensely popular painting, “The Bridge Over The Seine Near Argenteuil,” comes with a certificate of authenticity on the back and is numbered 1102, making it interesting for several reasons.
The artagraphic process used to produce this work in a limited edition of 2900 is considered the state-of-the-art in art reproduction and the most respectful approach to reproducing a painting by a master. In three steps, this technique creates a 3D replica of an original oil painting's color and surface texture. Colors are scanned with a digital laser and then printed separately using oil-based inks on a single sheet. A mold is created from the original painting to reproduce its surface texture and bas-relief brushstrokes. Unlike lithographs and serigraphs, there is a palpable material and relief if you run your fingers over the surface.
At the Impressionist group's first exhibition in 1874, Claude Monet demonstrated his deep interest in the motif by working on seven depictions of the Argenteuil bridge and four of the railroad bridge upstream. The artwork depicts Monet's immediate impressions of the scene rather than offering detailed realism. In these series, moored sailboats occupy the foreground, while the fluidity of the river melts harmoniously with the geometrically contrasted presence of the bridge and its imposing pillars. Monet manipulates his palette and complementary color schemes to create the illusion of light and movement through small, separate, and visible brushstrokes, making it one of the artist's most recognizable signatures. The painting displays a diversity of styles, with some elements more solid, having strong and distinct lines and structured forms defined by firm contours, while the water and the sky in the background give off an impression of moving space, floating, and ripples.
