By RAAK
Located in Utrecht, NL
In the realm of mid-20th century Dutch design, these model "C-1626" wall lamps remain fascinating designs defined by the contrast of the smooth-round satin-matt glass and the angular-straight grey metal. Hailing from the 1960s, these wall lamps are not only embodiments of simplicity and elegance, showcasing a design ethos that continues to captivate admirers today, but also illustrate how minimalist design can be so ingenious and expressive at the same time. RAAK had its main sales outlets in both Eindhoven and Amsterdam. The aim of the company was to advise for correct usage of lighting devices, in a way that these are adapted to the surrounding architecture. The name “RAAK” can be loosely translated as “bulls eye” in Dutch, i.e. the company hits the target with respect to its design and function. The designs produced by the company were aimed at being modest, elegant, and effective. These ideals are fully translated into the design of this pair; The design is clearly aimed at being modest, elegant, and effective. For collectors and connoisseurs alike, these Counterpoint Wall Lamps model "C-1626" stand as both a nod to history and a beacon of timeless style for contemporary interiors.Characterized by clean lines, geometric shapes, and a commitment to functionalism. The design is remarkable for its ability to seamlessly blend into diverse interior settings. The design has great proportions, to create an attention-grabbing look. When lit, these lamps create an exceptionally atmospheric light, giving the glass a warm, cosy colour as well. Raak Amsterdam, the illustrious producer of these lights was renowned for its commitment to craftsmanship and innovation. Established in 1954, Raak quickly gained recognition for collaborating with exceptional designers like Jan-Willem Bosman. Their partnership produced timeless lighting solutions that continue to inspire contemporary designers and enthusiasts alike. Large Opaline Glass and Brass Wall Lamps by Erik Gunnar Asplund, Sweden 1940s
By Erik Gunnar Asplund, ASEA
Located in Utrecht, NL
In the annals of mid-century modern design, the Swedish designer and architect, Gunnar Asplund stood out as a luminary, and his delicately sculptural creations, such as this pair of wall lamps from the 1950s, epitomize the era's sophistication and functional beauty. Swedish architect and designer, Erik Gunnar Asplund is celebrated as the godfather of functionalist design in Sweden. Asplund's meticulous attention to detail and penchant for marrying form with function is evident in these wall lamps, combining materials just as ingeniously as forms and shapes. Crafted in the 1950s, these wall lamps feature circular brass mounts that gracefully extend two brass arms, holding both the light bulbs and the large, sculptural opaline glass diffusers. The geometric precision of the design reflects Asplund's architectural background, where clean lines and balanced proportions reign supreme. The lamps serve as great examples of the enduring quality of mid-century Swedish craftsmanship. Swedish mid-century modern design, marked by its emphasis on simplicity and functionality, sought to bring beauty into everyday life. Asplund's pieces encapsulate this ethos, transcending mere utilitarianism to become objets d'art that enhance living spaces. Manufactured by ASEA, a Swedish powerhouse in electrical engineering and industrial design, these lamps embody the marriage of aesthetics and utility. ASEA, founded in 1883, played a pivotal role in shaping Sweden's industrial landscape. Their foray into lighting design seamlessly blended technological innovation with artistic sensibility, making them a prominent player in the mid-century modern movement. The choice of brass and opaline glass as primary materials in these lamps speaks to the enduring appeal of this combination in mid-century modern lighting design. Brass, with its warm and timeless lustre, complements the opulence of mid-century interiors, while opaline glass diffusers disperse light with a soft, ethereal glow. This harmonious pairing endures as a hallmark of sophistication, blending seamlessly into contemporary design aesthetics. Swedish lighting design, deeply rooted in the country's commitment to quality craftsmanship and functional elegance, continues to influence global trends. The enduring popularity of mid-century modern design, exemplified by these Erik Gunnar Asplund lamps...

Mid-Century Modern Brass and Glass Ceiling Lamp, Europe ca 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
The best thing about hanging ceiling lights - besides their stylish look - is that they are the best option to make interiors appear more spacious. They can be used them to concentrate light, or to just add an accent to the room. This lamp’s design revolves around the clear glass sphere. Glass is the perfect material for light shades as it allows light to pass through it. This means that glass light shades offer almost as much illumination as a bare light bulb. The result is bright and vibrant light, and this is exactly what this model offers. The design’s main point is its effective simpleness, free of any unnecessary detail. The uncluttered look leaves the attention on the materials and on functionality that the form is also in service of. As such, the canopy, the rod, and the shade holder are all quite understated, accentuating the glass shade instead. The pairing of glass and brass is perhaps the most iconic material duo in mid-century modern European lighting...

Brass and Opal Wall Light by Atelier Jean Perzel, France Early 20th century
By Atelier Jean Perzel
Located in Utrecht, NL
From 1920 to 1939, Art Deco revolutionized 20th century architecture and design. The period also gave birth to the Jean Perzel company, which would also make its mark on the world of lighting and design. Jean Perzel’s light fixtures and furniture in both glass and bronze later adorned the world’s most prestigious addresses… from the King’s Court in Belgium to the home of Henry Ford as well as the Rothschild’s family residence. He also conceived the lighting for the League of Nations in Geneva, the Luxembourg Cathedral, the Embassy of Canada at Lahaye, and even the French cruise ship Normandie. Like all wall lights from the Atelier, this wall light was designed and handcrafted in their workshop located in the heart of Paris. Since each model highlighted the architecture of the place that inspired its creation, the pure lines of Jean Perzel’s fixtures...
