Finnish Brass and Opal Glass Chandelier by Saariston Valaisin, Finland ca 1950s

About the Item

It is simply impossible to talk about 20th century lighting design without mentioning Finland and the Finnish “masters of light”. Brass bent into flowing curves, glass shades, and decorative elements inspired by the flora and fauna characterize Finnish mid-century models, showcased by this gorgeous chandelier. This chandelier is a testament to the era's emphasis on proportionality and aesthetic balance. The upward facing glass shades are placed at the end of the five organically curved brass arms stemming from an elaborate cluster. Their gently rounded bell shape is paired with opal glass, resulting in a cosy impression that is perfect for ambient lighting. This model has numerous notably unique and rare elements, such as the patterned opal glass shades and the cluster. The latter is composed of multiple layers, starting with a small finial at the bottom, extending into a larger brass part and then a plate that supports a counterweight from which the arms stem from. The opal glass, with its milky translucence, evokes a sense of ethereal beauty and warmth, transforming any space into a haven of ambient illumination. Finally, the arms hide a glass middle part that is a rare element even among the immensely individual and innovative designs of the era. Finnish designers, most notably, Paavo Tynell, were masters of peculiar decorative elements that never feel tacky or excessive, and this is mainly thanks to their great sense of balance. Here the rest of the brass body, including the straight rod and the round canopy, are understated, creating the balance between the materials and shapes. The glass shades are supported by brass shade holders, under which peculiar, looped brass rings are placed. These rings further contribute to the reason why this model is just as, or even more interesting when inspected from the bottom. The choice of materials and decorative elements reflects a commitment to both form and function, an ethos deeply ingrained in Finnish design philosophy. In the mid-20th century, Finnish design emerged as a beacon of innovation and aesthetic prowess, and Saariston Valaisin, the distinguished purveyor of Finnish ceiling fixtures, played a pivotal role in defining the era's design language. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, this chandelier embodies the quintessence of Finnish mid-century lighting design. The subtle decorative elements harken back to the masterful artistry of Paavo Tynell, a luminary in Finnish lighting design. Much like mid-20th century Finnish design, this chandelier model is characterized by a harmonious blend of functionality and artistic expression. It is from a period where designers sought to create pieces that transcended mere utility, embracing a holistic approach that merged form and function seamlessly. The aesthetic purity and timeless elegance of Finnish design continue to resonate, shaping the way we perceive and appreciate the marriage of art and utility in everyday objects. This uniquely decorated ceiling lamp was designed in an era in which Finland saw the birth of many of its most iconic lighting models. It was a period of consistency, excellence, and sophistication design wise. Itsu, short for Itä-Suomen Sähkö (eng. Eastern Finland Electricity), was a small, lesser known manufactory that produced characteristic models in small quantities. By the 1950s, Finland had established itself as a force for innovation in design. The best qualities of Finnish light...

  • Stilnovo Brass and Glass Chandelier, Italy, 1950s
    By Stilnovo
    Located in Utrecht, NL
This characteristic Stilnovo chandelier is the definition of an eye-catching design. Decorative lighting is basically the fourth layer of illumination, the jewellery of the room. This lamp contains the impact of accent lighting with a one-of-a-kind structure. A well-chosen lighting piece can change the overall look of a room and how it feels to be in that room. Historically, chandeliers would hang in the foyer or dining room, however, nowadays, a chandelier is often placed in smaller rooms or even a bathroom to set the aesthetic impression of the space. This mid-century chandelier has an innovative look that is established by the unique geometry of the arms, the conical cluster, and the peculiar shape of the glass shades. This model’s design revolves around its ten opaline glass shades arranged uniquely on curved brass arms. The arms are in pairs, with five connecting points to the cluster. They are bent to cross each other at different heights with a strong curvature. Yet, the resulting structure isn’t chaotic, instead it is interesting and airy, highlighting the shape of the glass shades. The pressed spheres have slim “necks” letting through the light directly. The combination of brass and glass was especially characteristic of the mid-century era as the brass shines beautifully when the light is on. The black lacquered conical cluster is a clever addition as it serves as a focal point. To leave the focus on the body the canopy and the tubing are quite understated. As a result, the design is well-balanced. Stilnovo was the forerunner of innovative Italian lighting design, earning their models much recognition and often a place in museums. This unique chandelier leaves...

  • Mid-Century Modern Brass and Glass Ceiling Lamp, Europe ca 1950s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
The best thing about hanging ceiling lights - besides their stylish look - is that they are the best option to make interiors appear more spacious. They can be used them to concentrate light, or to just add an accent to the room. This lamp’s design revolves around the clear glass sphere. Glass is the perfect material for light shades as it allows light to pass through it. This means that glass light shades offer almost as much illumination as a bare light bulb. The result is bright and vibrant light, and this is exactly what this model offers. The design’s main point is its effective simpleness, free of any unnecessary detail. The uncluttered look leaves the attention on the materials and on functionality that the form is also in service of. As such, the canopy, the rod, and the shade holder are all quite understated, accentuating the glass shade instead. The pairing of glass and brass is perhaps the most iconic material duo in mid-century modern European lighting...
