Stilnovo Accent Table Lamp, Italy, 1960s
By Stilnovo
Located in Utrecht, NL
This characteristic Stilnovo table lamp is the definition of an eye-catching design. Decorative lighting is basically the fourth layer of illumination, the jewellery of the room. This lamp contains the comfort of ambiance lighting, the efficiency of task lighting, and the impact of accent lighting. Accent lamps are generally smaller lights that give a dark corner a nice glow. In this design lamp’s case however, the look is just as appealing when turned off, which can be considered a Stilnovo speciality. The copper structure is layered, starting from the bottom with a round black lacquered base. The thin, nickel-plated metal tube rests on a smaller round base and supports the drum-shaped middle section that serves as the diffuser. As such, it is made of thinner, tinted methacrylate that dims the light to create atmospheric, stylish lighting. The shade has small holes on its top that lets the light through for an appealing effect. The design is topped off with the thin metal tube piercing through the shade visually, ending in a small sphere as a focal point. The tricolour palette and combination of materials sets the design tone, creating an aesthetic that is reminiscent not only of the space age, but also of industrial design. This lamp is truly original and seems to find its origins in Europe. On a side table or a sideboard, this Stilnovo table lamp will quickly find its marks in any interior. To accompany the stylish look, the copper has beautiful patina that adds vintage charm to the otherwise modern aesthetic of the design. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The metal has a beautiful patina with some marks. Dimensions: 6.88 in Ø x 13.38 in H 17.5 cm Ø x 34 cm H About the manufacturer: Stilnovo was founded in the heart of Milan by Bruno Gatta in 1946. In 1947, Stilnovo participated in the 8th Triennale di Milano and immediately activated a communications campaign, focused on the most important specialized magazines in the sector. In the following years, Bruno Gatta partnered with his brother Paolo, who had recently graduated from university and in September 1949, they opened “Stilnovo Srl”, with a share capital of 400,000 Italian Lire. This set off a managerial pathway which, over the course of just a few years, saw the company become a point of reference in modern lighting. By 1956, Stilnovo achieved a share capital of 4,000,000 Italian Lire, a tenfold increase in just seven years. Their designs were celebrated and the “2061” model became the first Stilnovo lamp selected at the Compasso d’Oro. In 1957, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni designed two Saliscendi light fixtures for the new Milan Chamber of Commerce. The coming decades brought many designs that are now considered iconic, and by the 1970s, many of their models were featured in various media outlets, galleries, and museums. Stilnovo took part in the 1972 show “Italy, the New Domestic Landscape” at the MoMA in New York, where the Periscopio and Nuvola lamps...

Six-Arm Brass and Metal Chandelier, Scandinavia, 1960s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Chandeliers have often been used as decorative focal points for rooms since the 20th century. In Scandinavian mid-century design, where interior lighting is of particular importance, designers managed to master the art of light without blinding or crushing space perception. This chandelier is in the so-called candle style, originating in the traditional candelabra, with upward facing lightbulbs and multiple arms, usually arranged symmetrically. Here, the six arms are identical and symmetrical, holding up the shades. Like most Scandinavian light fixtures...

Scandinavian Cylindrical Tripod Floor Lamp, Scandinavia 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
This one-of-a-kind floor lamp is a delightfully distinctive model, with immediately recognizable details. Design in the mid-century years was fuelled by the development of materials and technology with stunning results as seen in this floor lamp design. Scandinavian furniture was made with mostly light-coloured materials and some furniture shapes included elements of asymmetry, or having two sides that were not completely even and balanced. This can be seen here as well, as the lamp’s black lacquered metal structure isn’t perfectly symmetrical, instead, the “cage” surrounding the lampshade spirals downwards. The fluted lampshade has a cylindrical shape and is made of a light coloured fabric. It is stretched over metal wires that create the lines. Thanks to its large, almost see-through quality, the warm light is diffused evenly when the lamp is switched on. Furthermore, the fabric shade pairs well with the colder metal structure. The tripod legs stem out from a ball-shaped joint, and also end in small, brass sphere feet. While the design dates to the 1950s, it has an interesting, almost futuristic modern...

"Auditorie" Pendant Lamp by Svend Middelboe for Nordisk Solar, Denmark, 1960s
By Nordisk Solar Co., Svend Middelboe
Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Auditorie” series contains three lamps differing in size, this pendant is “Auditorie 3”, the largest one with the most shade layers. Known for its long, elegant neck and multilayered shade system, this rare model is among Svend Middelboe’s most coveted designs. This model has several common details with the Verona pendant light; it was designed with functionality in mind, specifically to spread light in the most efficient way. The inner shades diffuse light and there is no glare. The large main shade, dictates the design; the upper umbrella-like shade is connected to the stem that contains the socket. There are three more shades gradually decreasing in size. Like the Verona model, the surface on the outside is brass anodized aluminium, while the inside is lacquered white. From the late 1950s, Nordisk Solar Compagni—or simply “Solar” (as seen in adverts and catalogues from the era)—focused entirely on manufacturing high-quality lighting. They collaborated with the era’s most well-known Danish lighting designers and used their expertise in using plastic for the production of radio sets, to create exceptional lighting fixtures in the late 1950s and 1960s. Svend Middelboe’s pendants were among the best-selling models in the company’s catalogue. Danish lighting manufacturer Nordisk Solar was founded in 1919 by Jacob L. Jørgensen and Herluf Sørensen. Svend MIddelboe joined the company later, and soon became a permanent designer. The company is still well-known today on the vintage markets for its Mid-Century Modern pendants and layered lighting...
