Danish Curved Brass Floor Lamp, Denmark ca 1950s

About the Item

This eccentric mid-century floor lamp combines a classical shape reimagined with carefully thought out proportions and Danish craftsmanship. The tube’s geometric construction defines this model, making it a one-of-a-kind model. Being a mid-century Danish-made design, this floor lamp features numerous functional elements, including an adjustable head secured by a brass ball joint, adjustable neck and a tapered empire lampshade. Therefore, the light this lamp provides is highly customizable in its direction. The base is circular and is made of brass, which was the preferred material for the most famous floor lamps of the era as it is enduring and - as this lamp shows - develops a beautiful patina over time. The brass body has an appealing, patinated golden colour that stands out even more thanks to the curve. The tapered empire lampshade is lacquered white and has decorative holes punched into it that creates a cosy effect when the lamp is lit. While the lampshade is unique on its own, the true aesthetic feature is the brass tube and its curve. The shape resembles a hook on the bottom with a curve that doesn’t end at the base but continues on to create an almost floating effect. In line with the Functionalist trend of the time, the designer abandoned ornamentation in favour of form. Nonetheless, the warmth and beauty inherent in Danish design is maintained, as well as high-quality craftsmanship. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The brass has a beautiful patina. • Scandinavian Cylindrical Tripod Floor Lamp, Scandinavia 1950s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
This one-of-a-kind floor lamp is a delightfully distinctive model, with immediately recognizable details. Design in the mid-century years was fuelled by the development of materials and technology with stunning results as seen in this floor lamp design. Scandinavian furniture was made with mostly light-coloured materials and some furniture shapes included elements of asymmetry, or having two sides that were not completely even and balanced. This can be seen here as well, as the lamp’s black lacquered metal structure isn’t perfectly symmetrical, instead, the “cage” surrounding the lampshade spirals downwards. The fluted lampshade has a cylindrical shape and is made of a light coloured fabric. It is stretched over metal wires that create the lines. Thanks to its large, almost see-through quality, the warm light is diffused evenly when the lamp is switched on. Furthermore, the fabric shade pairs well with the colder metal structure. The tripod legs stem out from a ball-shaped joint, and also end in small, brass sphere feet. While the design dates to the 1950s, it has an interesting, almost futuristic modern...
