Floor Lamp with Ruched Shade, Scandinavia ca 1950s

About the Item

In the design annals of Scandinavian modern furniture, the mid-century emerge as a golden era, where form seamlessly intertwined with function, giving rise to timeless pieces that continue to captivate contemporary sensibilities. One such enchanting piece from this era is this graceful floor lamp, a testament to the region's commitment to craftsmanship and new ideas and forms. Crafted from solid wood, this lamp stands as a beacon of the era's design ethos, where organic materials were celebrated for their inherent beauty. The wood, with its warm tones and rich grains, exudes a sense of elemental authenticity that is emblematic of Scandinavian design. What sets this lamp apart, however, is its unique glass base. A departure from conventional lamp bases, this glass foundation not only supports the structure but also introduces an element of intrigue and sophistication. The glass, adorned with a circular pattern adds a layer of visual interest, elevating the lamp from a mere functional object to a work of art. There are further such subtle details, like the single brass ring on the neck, and the lampshade. The shade is a delicate dance of fabric in a classic ruched style. The light, when diffused through the light fabric material, casts a warm and inviting glow, creating an ambiance that is both timeless and comforting. Scandinavian mid-century modern lighting pieces, including floor lamps endure in popularity for several reasons. Firstly, the emphasis on clean lines and organic forms creates a sense of simplicity and harmony that seamlessly integrates with various interior styles. Secondly, the commitment to quality craftsmanship ensures durability, a hallmark that endears these pieces to generations. Lastly, the enduring allure lies in the ability of these designs to evoke a sense of nostalgia while remaining relevant in today's design landscape. With its uniquely delightful combination of natural materials of solid wood, glass and linen fabric, this floor lamp model stands as an emblem of an era that prioritized both form and function. This legacy continues to illuminate contemporary spaces with a timeless glow and style, making this one-of-a-kind piece a rare find to complement and elevate any space. • Scandinavian Cylindrical Tripod Floor Lamp, Scandinavia 1950s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
This one-of-a-kind floor lamp is a delightfully distinctive model, with immediately recognizable details. Design in the mid-century years was fuelled by the development of materials and technology with stunning results as seen in this floor lamp design. Scandinavian furniture was made with mostly light-coloured materials and some furniture shapes included elements of asymmetry, or having two sides that were not completely even and balanced. This can be seen here as well, as the lamp’s black lacquered metal structure isn’t perfectly symmetrical, instead, the “cage” surrounding the lampshade spirals downwards. The fluted lampshade has a cylindrical shape and is made of a light coloured fabric. It is stretched over metal wires that create the lines. Thanks to its large, almost see-through quality, the warm light is diffused evenly when the lamp is switched on. Furthermore, the fabric shade pairs well with the colder metal structure. The tripod legs stem out from a ball-shaped joint, and also end in small, brass sphere feet. While the design dates to the 1950s, it has an interesting, almost futuristic modern...
