Provenance: Babcock Galleries (bears their label verso.) signed verso with artists monogram signature. Marylyn Dintenfass (born 1943) is an American painter, printmaker, and sculptor. She is primarily known for her oil paintings, which use a dynamic color palette and lexicon of gestural imagery to explore dualities in the human experience and everyday sensual pleasures. Marylyn Dintenfass was born in 1943 in Brooklyn, New York and spent most of her early years in Brooklyn and then Long Island. She attended Queens College, and graduated in 1965 with a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. During this time, the artist worked with Abstract Expressionist painter John Ferren and muralist Barse Miller. Marilyn Dintenfass explored new media and developed her own reaction to abstract expressionism with color, line, and gesture. Dintenfass acquired an appreciation for a broad range of materials that led to major sculpture installations composed of ceramic materials, steel, lead, wood, wax and a variety of pigments and epoxies. Following a tour of museums in Amsterdam, Paris and Rome, the artist made her way to Jerusalem in 1966. During this journey, the artist worked with painter Ruth Bamberger, studied etching and mingled with the artists and intellectuals of the city. The result was Dintenfass's first architectural commission, to design the “Pop Op Disco,” Jerusalem's first disco. This commission allowed her to work with an array of materials to employ shapes, surfaces, textures, colors, and lights, all of which coalesced in her consciousness that would become important components of her mature personal visual vocabulary. Dintenfass also married and started her family during these years. Art critic Meredith Mendelsohn writes, “Dintenfass uses luscious colors, repetitive forms, and a gestural intensity that combines Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art.” Dintenfass often works with oil paint on wooden panels fragmented into parts of a grid. "After completing a painting," writes curator and critic Lilly Wei in a study of Dintenfass' work, "Dintenfass literally takes it apart, treating each panel as a discrete entity, exchanging panels between works in an aesthetic mix and match as she searches for interactions and relationships of color and form that satisfy her sense of visual excitement, sparked by the frisson of the dissonant." In an interview with critic Irving Sandler, Dintenfass speaks of the grid as a necessary, formal restraint for the passion of the gestural marks it contains. Joyce Robinson illuminates; “Dintenfass is at heart, though, a painter, and the grid, with its reference to and notion of modular parts, has remained central to her artistic enterprise, functioning as a kind of Apollonian matrix holding in check the exuberant, vividly colored abstractions of this essentially Dionysian artist.” Lilly Wei adds, "Ultimately, however, Dintenfass is more sensualist than theorist, and her paintings owe much of their allure to their materiality and the dazzle of color. Her array of ripe, radiant, saturated hues—a palette of gorgeous diversity—can be silkily smooth and nuanced; boldly exuberant; or edgily, feverishly discordant." The artist's abstract imagery usually appears in her work as various forms of stripes or circles arranged across translucent layers of alternating matte and high gloss textures. In a conversation with gallery owner, John Driscoll, Dintenfass likens these symbols to language that predates the written word, saying her "work relates to communication through the visceral channel." Rooted in autobiography, the artist's paintings also examine the contrast between what she calls the “micro” and the “macro.” At times the shapes simultaneously resemble cells under a microscope and visions of the cosmos. Dintenfass' themes explore the dualities of everyday pleasures; depending on the focus of a series, her symbols might conjure characters, candies, car wheels, or paint itself. Although known for her paintings, Dintenfass was first recognized for her sculptural installations. Her innovative use of mixed media (ceramics, epoxies, wax, pigments, steel, lead, wood, etc.) transformed understanding of what a “ceramic” work of art could be and firmly fixed her position and influence among a generation of mixed media artists expanding the traditional definitions and boundaries of object and materials to create modern art. The results came as architectural reliefs and installation sculpture unique to her organic but structural personal style. Similar to her paintings, Dintenfass developed a modular language of symbols, amalgams of line and curve, which she would combine to create detailed pictographic languages all her own, what she has called “organic alphabets.” As Ted Castle relates, “Ideas are furtive elements, stolen from the matrix, so as to be reformed by human genius into something unforeseen—a poem, a painting, a game of dominoes, a television set, a brick, a tile, a cup. Yasuhide Kobashi (古橋 矢須秀 Kobashi Yasuhide, 1931–2003) was a Japanese woodblock print artist, painter, sculptor and stage designer. He was born in Kojima in Okayama Prefecture. His father was a ceramic clay artist and head of the Kyoto Industrial Craft Company. Kobashi learned printmaking from the sōsaku hanga (creative prints) master Unichi Hiratsuka (1895–1997). In 1955, Kobashi graduated from the Kyoto College of Crafts and Textiles, and in 1959, he moved to New York City. At first he was sponsored by Lincoln Kirstein of the New York City Ballet, who had visited his studio in Kyoto and commissioned a number of works from him. Elaine De Kooning, art critic and wife of influential Abstract Expressionist Willem De Kooning recommended Kobashi to the Allan Stone Gallery, He would continue to work with this gallery for more than 30 years. When Kobashi moved to New York in 1959, many American intellectuals and artists were eager to learn about Japan. Among the early influences to reach a wide cross section of American society was Suzuki Daisetsu's (1870-1966) Introduction to Zen Buddhism, published in English in 1949 with a preface by the noted psychologist Carl Jung. Nelson Rockefeller (governor of New York and later vice-president) was Kobashi's patron, and acquired one of the artist's sculptures for the New York State Executive Mansion in Albany. As a young man he was exposed to a wide range of arts, including sculpture, stage design, carpentry, stone cutting, ceramics, calligraphy, painting, and furniture design. Most notably, he studied woodblock printmaking under Hiratsuka Unichi (1895-1997), one of the leading innovators in the Creative Print (ssaku-hanga) movement that advocated total artistic control by a single artist over the entire printmaking process, in contrast to the traditional methods of ukiyo-e in which designer, carver, printer, and publisher all had a role in production. Kobashi is best known for his sosaku hanga woodblock prints and his sculptures intended to be rearranged, which he called "self-constructions". The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA New York City), the Neuberger Museum of Art (Purchase, New York), the Albright Knox, the Weisman Art Museum (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis), and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville are among the public collections holding work by Kobashi. Igor Vishnyakov is a Russian Postwar & Contemporary artist who was born in 1968 in Moscow. Igor spent his childhood in Africa and Southeast Asia. After returning to Moscow in the mid-80’s he started painting and photographing key figures of the Russian avant-garde movement, and began to widely exhibit his work. In his youth Vishnyakov became a significant figure in the Moscow and St. Petersburg art community. He became a permanent member of the New Academy of Fine Arts soon after it was founded by Timur Novikov in 1989. He was first made aware of alternate photographic printing processes while studying in the New Academy. Amongst other photographers such as Novikov, Egelskiy, Alexandrov, Ostrov and other Academy members, Vishnyakov was engaged in reviving precious photo printing techniques widely spread in the XIX century, such as gum arabic pigment print, bromoils, calotypes, chirotypes, carbon process, Savrasov and Sery methods and many others. In 1990 Vishnyakov moved to New York to establish himself as a reporter and then as a fashion photographer and soon got his work published in a dozen of American and European magazines. Soon after, he continued his art education in the New York studio of a French painter, Emmanuel Flipo. Although living as an emigrant, Vishnyakov retained his connections with the Russian art world, especially with the New Academy, and participated in a number of group exhibitions. In 1997 he joined the movement that gathered neo-academics from Moscow and St. Petersburg. His very own established technique is mixed media, combining classical photography, gum arabic pigment printing, tempera painting and printing. The smallest details, such as the peculiarities and nuances of applying an emulsion, with the pressure of brush strokes, or paper texture, give a strange, mystic significance, to his whole work. Photographic details show through and then dissolve in the layers of paint, leaving the image slightly unexposed and the philosophical background unrevealed, impelling the viewer to come back over and over again. Vishnyakov’s work has a feeling of ephemerality, conveying a sense of never being truly finished, leaving the viewer in a truly meditative state. In his never ending reconnaissance of an ideal image of beauty, Vishnyakov is inspired by esoteric and Oriental spiritual practices. Everything finds a place in his art, whether it is the Asian Tao doctrine of five elements, symbols of Tarot’s Major Arcana, majestic temples of ancient India, nude figures or plain netsuke figures. Whatever it is, his major principle is harmony, both inner and outward, spiritual and visual. Vishnyakov also teaches photography in America and Japan, practices kung fu and remains a Shaolin monk’s novice, a practice he has been doing for eleven years. At present he is living between New York and Moscow with his muse, the Russian supermodel, and talented painter, Sasha Pivovarova. Gunter Damisch (1958, Steyr- 2016 in Vienna) was an Austrian painter and sculptor . He is one of "den Neuen Wilde" New Savages. (Junge Wilde) Gunter Damisch attended the Musikgymnasium Linz and then studied medicine and German and history for a few semesters. By age 16, he had already made 150 woodcuts and attended the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg with Claus Pack, he studied from 1978 to 1983 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Maximilian Melcher and Arnulf Rainer . In 1992 he took on a visiting professorship at the Vienna Academy (master class for graphics ) in Vienna, and since 1998 he has been a full professor there. From 1997 until his untimely death in 2016, he was head of the graphic arts department at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. the 1980s Damisch was a member of the Viennese punk band Molto Brutto, where he played bass and organ. Gunter Damisch lived and worked in Vienna and Freidegg . He was one of the most important international representatives of contemporary Austrian art because of his unmistakable, convincing and consistently formulated repertoire of colors and shapes (reminiscent of Friedensreich Hundertwasser.) He worked in stone lithos, woodcuts, lithograph, artists’ books like a free jazz virtuoso, making huge, one-of-a-kind pieces with collage, drawing, painting, woodcut and monotype on the same sheet. In 1978, the Junge Wilde painting style arose in the German-speaking world in opposition to established avant garde, minimal art and conceptual art. It was linked to the similar Transavanguardia movement in Italy, USA (neo-expressionism) and France (Figuration Libre). Gunter Damisch (1958, Steyr- 2016 in Vienna) was an Austrian painter and sculptor . He is one of "den Neuen Wilde" New Savages. (Junge Wilde) Gunter Damisch attended the Musikgymnasium Linz and then studied medicine and German and history for a few semesters. By age 16, he had already made 150 woodcuts and attended the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg with Claus Pack, he studied from 1978 to 1983 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Maximilian Melcher and Arnulf Rainer . In 1992 he took on a visiting professorship at the Vienna Academy (master class for graphics ) in Vienna, and since 1998 he has been a full professor there. From 1997 until his untimely death in 2016, he was head of the graphic arts department at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. the 1980s Damisch was a member of the Viennese punk band Molto Brutto, where he played bass and organ. Gunter Damisch lived and worked in Vienna and Freidegg . He was one of the most important international representatives of contemporary Austrian art because of his unmistakable, convincing and consistently formulated repertoire of colors and shapes (reminiscent of Friedensreich Hundertwasser.) He worked in stone lithos, woodcuts, lithograph, artists’ books like a free jazz virtuoso, making huge, one-of-a-kind pieces with collage, drawing, painting, woodcut and monotype on the same sheet. In 1978, the Junge Wilde painting style arose in the German-speaking world in opposition to established avant garde, minimal art and conceptual art. It was linked to the similar Transavanguardia movement in Italy, USA (neo-expressionism) and France (Figuration Libre). The Junge Wilde painted their expressive paintings in bright, intense colors and with quick, broad brushstrokes very much influenced by Professor at the Academy of Art in Berlin, Karl Horst Hödicke They were also known as the Neue Wilde. (144.8 x 83.8 x 58.4cm) Provenance: Malcolm Forbes collection The artist Loren Munk (born 1951) is primarily known for his YouTube nickname James Kalm as an uploader of videos about New York exhibitions, amongst others. He presents himself as a maker of contemporary paintings for several decades and of cubist paintings of urban imagery. Munk has received accolades for his drawings and mosaics. He differs from traditional mosaic artists by the manner in which he incorporates glass into his decorative paintings. His unique and innovative use of materials such as mirror, gold-leaf and glass mosaic affirmed him as a founding force of Kitsch Art and a leading member of New York Neo-Expressionism. Munk's work debuted in SoHo in 1981 with a double show at J. Fields Gallery and Gabrielle Bryers. Since then, he has overseen an international career. In addition to exhibiting in Brazil, France, Germany and the United States, Munk has received national and overseas, public and private commissions. He is well represented in important collections throughout Europe, South and North America and the Middle East. Most recently, Munk has been producing a series of paintings which tackle the subject of art itself through a historical and diagrammatic lens. Munk documents the New York art world in YouTube videos, using the name James Kalm. Ivan Chermayeff born London, United Kingdom, 1932 Chermayeff was one of the greatest American graphic designers, the son of the Russian born, British architect Serge Chermayeff. Ivan Chermayeff Graduated from the Phillips Academy of Andover, Massachusetts in 1950. He studied at Harvard until 1952, and the Institute of Design (New Bauhaus) until 1954. Graduated from the Yale School of Arts and Architecture in 1955 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. The same year he did a short apprenticeship with Alvin Lustig—a pioneer of American graphic design—and then moved on to CBS as Assistant Art Director in record cover design. In 1956 he co-founded Brownjohn, Chermayeff & Geismar Associate, with Robert Brownjohn and his former schoolmate Tom Geismar. In 1959 Brownjohn left and the studio changed to Chermayeff & Geismar Inc. It soon became one of the best-known design firms worldwide. The firm produced over six-hundred marks, and they were among the very first to develop an abstract trademark (Chase Bank, 1960), still in use today. In 1964 they designed the outstanding corporate identity of Mobil Oil, that is one of the most recognizable identities ever. From its foundation, the studio served major companies including Giorgio Armani, Barneys, Hearst, MoMA (Museum of Modern Art), National Geographic, NBC (National Broadcasting Company), PBS (Public Broadcasting Service), Rockefeller, and others. Recently, Serge Haviv joined as a new partner and the firm changed to Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv. Besides his design profession, Chermayeff is a talented illustrator artist and collagist. Many graphic pieces he made show a perfect balance of rational logics with imagination, featuring both abstract geometric shapes and figurative images. His collages require a same sense of witty assemblage, where gathered information, like scraps of paper, stamps, and Polaroid pictures combine as fragmented clues to a greater message. The collages often take the shape of people, whose facial features are born of scraps and daily ephemera. They are amusing and infinitely thought-provoking; as Chermayeff has said, “Collages make it possible for everything to be something else.” Board overseers at Parsons School of Design and trustee at New School University from 1988 to 2002. She is known for her high color floral and nature design painting, printmaking and teaching. Goldman's media include watercolor, oil painting, silkscreen, intaglio print, lithograph, relief, screenprint,. aquatint etching and terrazzo. "Lyrical realism," based on a combination of free association and direct observation, best describes her style. Goldman’s luminous prints reveals the artist’s muse in a graphically novel way. Represented in many of the world’s leading public and private collections and museums, David Rankin’s work is featured in Australia’s leading institutions, including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria and Queensland Art Gallery. David Rankin was born in Plymouth, Devon, England in 1946 then emigrated to Australia with his family in 1948. He was inspired by the greats from Leonardo da Vinci to Paul Klee as well as being influenced by the history of Buddhism and Asian art. In his travels before he arrived in Sydney in 1967 he developed a concept of what he wanted to achieve as an Australian artist. His dream was to express the anima, the life spirit or the essence of God in all nature. As an Australian artist he believed could bring the elements of Western Art together with an understanding and love for the cultures of Asia and the Australian Aborigine. He also felt that as Australia was closer to Asia than Europe it made sense to think about the art of Indian, Chinese and Japanese artists, and that one could not be an authentic articulate Australian artist without a love and respect for the artistic and spiritual expressions of the various Aboriginal artists, peoples and cultures. His work combined elements of Abstract Expressionist painting with Jewish and Aboriginal influences. In 1979 his first wife, Jennifer Mary Roberts (née Haynes) died. Rankin subsequently met his current wife Lily Brett, whose own life was etched by tragedy with her parents being survivors of the Holocaust. She too migrated to Australia as a child after the Second World War in 1948. The artist recounts that his empathy for Lily and the pity for his first wife's death fused into what he calls "the dark blessing of my life." The darkness was transformed into images. The author Dore Ashton writes that the events of 1979 and the fire which ravished his studio in 1997 and burnt his art works and many personal possessions, had a profound impact on his work. Having personal life experiences as his subject matter, Rankin's paintings contemplate these things. For example, his Jerusalem series followed a trip to Jerusalem in 1988, which then led to his Golgotha works. His travels to the Australian, American and Mexican deserts became the subject matter for many of his canvases, such as Ridge – Mungo, Golden Prophecy – San Antonio, Grey Sonora Landscape and then led to his Witness Series. From the fire in his studio he then painted Buddha and Flames. He illustrated two books by Lily Brett on the holocaust and explored the theme further in his huge work The Drowned and The Saved from a book by Primo Levi of the same name. John Wood (b. 1945, Utah) is a Bay Area artist who currently resides in Emeryville, CA. He received his BFA in painting from the University of Utah in 1971, and an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1974. Wood’s abstract imagery is the culmination of his lifetime of work in art. His current work uses the human form as a starting point to build up layers of line, form and color in graphite, crayon, oil pastel and enamel. He strives to be as open and engaged as possible with the developing image, trusting that the art will lead him in the right direction. In the end, the work alludes to the human body symbolically, but Woods is much more interested in the emotional and sensual qualities that emerge rather than recognizable forms. In addition to producing his own art, Woods has inspired many through independent mural projects with children of all ages in Utah, New York, and California. He has taught at Cranbrook Academy Museum, through the NEA Artist-in-Education Program, as a private instructor for children’s art in New York and Salt Lake City, as a drawing and painting instructor at Farmington Community Center, and as head of the fine arts department at Judge Memorial Catholic High School in Salt Lake City. Woods has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States including Utah, New York, California, Colorado; and museums such as the Morris Graves Museum of Art, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Utah Museum of Fine Art, Springville Museum of Art, and the Cranbrook Academy of Art Museum.
