CLAUDE GAVEAU (1906 - 1970) A beautiful and large signed oil on canvas by the important french painter Claude Gaveau. The work is signed upper right and unlined and unrestored on its original canvas. Title: “Composition” Signature: Signed upper right Medium: Oil on original canvas Provenance: Private french collection Size: c. 24 x 29 inches unframed Claude Gaveau (1906 - 1970) is a French painter born in Neuilly-sur-Marne in 1940. The painter was born near Paris and studied there as well as in Belgium. He comes from a family of artists, his grandfather was the creator of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. He is passionate since very young about painting and entered the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris in 1955 where he studied mural art for five years, stained glass, tapestry, mosaic and fresco. In 1960, he studied at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, becoming equally accomplished in oil painting, watercolor, drawing and lithography, pastel and gouache. Influenced by great Post Impressionist painters such as Paul Cézanne, George Braque and Raoul Dufy, Gaveau gets inspired as well by music and lyricism. His talent was quickly recognized, in 1963 he won his first prize and obtained a scholarship from the Academy of Antwerp, Belgium which allowed him to study Flemish painting in Brussels. In 1965, with only 25 years, he made his first solo exhibition at the Angle Aigu Gallery in Paris. His career took a real turn in 1968 when he was nominated for the "la Critique Parrainé" Award by the Saint Placide Gallery in Paris. A recurrent traveler, the landscapes he observes all around the world allow him to broaden his artistic palette. Other exhibitions of his work followed during the 1960’s and 1970’s in France with the Galerie Vauban in Dijon in 1967, 1968 and 1970; with the Galerie Saint Placide in Paris in 1968; with the Galerie Marc Hudier in Belfort in 1970; and three one-man shows with the Galerie La Belle Gabrielle in Paris in 1972, 1975 and 1978. Dimensions: 24 X 24 X 1.75 in. GREGG ROBINSON The universe of visual art encompasses a huge spectrum of motivation and means of expression. Examples range from the most syrupy sentimentality to extremes of moral and intellectual confrontation. For me, the creative process is, on the simplest level, an aesthetic puzzle. Elements of the puzzle include contrast, color, visual texture, graphic pattern, and in some recent work, a simple cryptic symbolism. I have never been particularly interested in lyric or pictorial content, and though some of my work does contain undeniable spatial illusion, even that tends to be a by-product rather than a goal of the primary pursuit: the balance of light and dark, pure color and organic neutrals, energy and calm, strong pattern and subtle field. Having grown up in an environment of contemporary architecture, I have always valued the classic modern synthesis of form and function exemplified by the Bauhaus movement of the early 20th century. Hence, the simplest solutions are often the most satisfying. Obviously, the modernist ideal of efficiency in form and function requires that method of execution be as well adapted to the aesthetic goal as the visual language itself. The media before you is the result of many years of experimentation that came to its current form in early 1992. I work with dry pigment over a plaster surface. My tools are broad knives, sponges, rags and masking. The finish is a high gloss alkyd resin. In 2006-2007 she followed the HISK programme in Ghent, in 2013-2014 she did a residency at the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. De Meutter is represented by Tim Van Laere Gallery since 2006. Ellen De Meutter alters her viewer's reality by presenting a language in which she classifies the figures, shapes and colors from her personal world into a captivating utopia. Contrary to current trends in Flemish art, De Meutter is not simply relaying an anecdote; she composes unique imagery that allows her to experiment with the placement of the subject and unique treatments of her medium. De Meutter's repertoire of vivid, semi-neon colors contrast the muted grays blacks and grays on which they lay. These seemingly energetic colors are at once enhanced by the dark undertones of the canvas below, while simultaneously insinuating a concealed gravity of subject. Belgian art critic and curator, Luk Lambrecht remarks on De Meutter's painting: "she folds back 'her' world onto itself, into a solid mass of color from which, very slowly, vague contours emerge, which safeguard our expectations about looking at an image." De Meutter's scenes are reminiscent of schoolyard games, incorporating a series of text and symbols. By combing figurative imagery with basic abstraction, Ellen De Meutter creates wildly successful compositions that allude to her comprehensive understanding of contemporary painting. In 2004 Brian began an ongoing collaboration with artist Slava Mogutin as SUPERM, and in 2016 with writer Rich Juzwiak as BOYFRIEND HOUSE.
