Simon Bull was born in Bedfordshire, England. The second of four children. His father, Ian Bull served as an officer in the Royal Army Chaplains’ Department of the British Army. Ian’s extensive military postings stationed the family around the world in Guyana, Hong Kong, Germany, and Northern Ireland. Simon went to boarding school in Yorkshire, attending Ripon Cathedral Choir School from 1965 to 1969 and in Surrey, at the Royal Russell School from 1969 to 1976. In 1976 he took a one-year Foundation course at Gloucestershire College of Art and Design and went on to graduate in 1980 from Leeds Polytechnic with a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art. He studied printmaking and Fine Art under Norman Webster and Norman Ackroyd RA. His time at Leeds was marked by his interest in and study of the masters, such as Henri Fantin-Latour, Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin, and Rembrandt; he wrote his dissertation on watercolorist John Sell Cotman. In his graduating year he exhibited his etching Jackie at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and his works were acquired by Leeds City Art Gallery. His art is currently represented exclusively, by his own company Simon Bull Studios of Carmel CA and MEUSE gallery on Carmel’s Ocean Avenue. Simon Bull Studios contracts with and supplies a network of fine art galleries around the world including Cutter & Cutter Fine Art, Park West Gallery and others. Arie Azene, Israeli painter, born in Germany, 1934 Arie (Eisman) Azene was born in Hamburg, Germany. He immigrated to the Land of Israel with his parents soon after birth. In 1958, after studying art in Paris, he settled on Kibbutz Tzova in the Judean Hills, where he lived for 28 years. He spent 1968-1970 in France, England and Germany. In 1984, he moved to Jerusalem. Stylistically, Azene was influenced by the New Horizons group to which he was exposed during his studies at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (School of Fine Arts) in Nancy and upon graduation became a professor of engraving at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de of St. Etienne. His first solo exhibition was in 1957. In 1968 , he became a full member of the Society of French Painters-Engravers . In 1997 he was awarded the Legion of Honor His work is essentially devoted to engraving, by which he likes to translate, thanks to the line, the life, movement and character of his characters: Punchinels, harlequins, musicians or equestrian scenes. He practices various techniques ( lithography, drypoint etching etc.) that he puts to use in the illustration of bibliophile books. Claude Weisbuch is also a painter and draftsman. His favorite colors are ochres, browns and whites, with which he seeks to introduce the effects of light by compositions where the line and finesse of the drawing preserve the life found in his engravings. Born in Chicago, (parents of both Mexican and Puerto Rican Latino heritage) Juarez received his B.F.A. at the San Francisco Art Institute (1977) and pursued graduate studies in Television and Film at the University of California, Los Angeles. Juarez frequently employs painterly floral motifs, which are inspired by the traditions of Hispanic, Latin American and non-Western painting. Roberto Juarez has been a significant presence in the art worlds of New York, Miami, Colorado, and beyond since the early 1980s. In 1978, Juarez completed his graduate thesis for UCLA in Paris and decided not to return to L.A. Juarez relocated to New York City, where in 1981, Ellen Stewart offered Juarez a former garage owned by La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club as an artist studio. The space, which had no water or electricity, was offered to Juarez rent-free, provided that he clean and maintain it. He was active in the Neo Expressionist era of the the late 1980's along with Julian Schnabel and David Salle. Throughout the 80s and 90s Juarez painted the branching forms of trees and flowers. While living in Miami in the 90s, Juarez began to incorporate peat moss, rice paper, and other natural materials in his canvases. Since 2000, and his move from Miami back to New York, Juarez's imagery turned more abstract, typically featuring geometric forms and systems. In a review from this period, art critic Grace Glueck noted that his works feature “a contrast between the softness of the grounds – blends of transparent and opaque materials in muted colors – and their strong geometric-organic motifs." In his use of elements of nature to portray an idyllic unity, Juarez looks back to such early-20th-century painters as Franz Marc and Henri Matisse. He has done prints with Shark’s Ink Studios in Lyons and Anderson Ranch Arts Center as well as Tamarind Institute. Roberto Juarez is a visual artist who has been active in the areas of painting, printmaking, drawing, and large-scale public commissions throughout his career. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Mexico, and is included in major museum collections such as the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, El Museo del Barrio, the Denver Art Museum, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Newark Museum, and the Speed Art Museum. He has completed public art projects and murals for the Miami International Airport, Grand Central Terminal, the Miami-Dade County Courthouse, Whitman College, and the University of Michigan College of Engineering. Juarez won the Prix de Rome in 1997 and was a Guggenheim Fellow in 2001-2002. Dorit Levi was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1952, her Yemenite upbringing and culture playing an important role in her art. The artist's personal experiences in Uganda, Africa where she lived for several years, are reflected in many of her paintings. Joellyn T Duesberry Wall on Wharf Street, #513, New Orleans, LA 1976. Oil on linen Dimensions: (Frame) H 50.5" x W 66.5". sight size 50 x 66" Joellyn Toler Duesberry (1944 – 2016) was a plein air landscape artist who worked in oils. She said that her paintings echo the work of John Marin and Milton Avery. Of her art, Duesberry said, "I am not interested in a realist painting, I am not interested in an abstract painting. I am interested in the tension." Joellyn Duesberry was born on June 30, 1944 in Richmond, Virginia. Growing up in rural Virginia instilled in her a love for the land. She said, "All my life I think I've unconsciously tried to recreate the place where bliss or terror first came to me. Both emotions seemed so strong that I had to locate them outside of myself, in the land. This goes back to a childhood habit of living in rural Virginia and seeking woods and creeks and lakes for solitary refuge; places where I could sketch and paint." She decided to start painting at age ten after being given a pair of red tennis shoes and walking on the beach, inspired by the colorful juxtaposition of sand, shadow, and shoe. Soon thereafter she decided that "Women artists existed and she needed to be among them." She received a BA with Distinction, Phi Beta Kappa, in art history and painting, from Smith College in 1966. In that year she was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. While at Smith, she "honed her skills by making countless copies of masterworks." She took her master's degree at New York University Institute of Fine Arts. Despite her degrees, she is considered to be a self-taught artist. Joellyn Duesberry was a plein air painter, who began "her canvases outdoors on an easel and finished] them in the studio, frequently making monotypes in between." She moved to Denver in 1985, and embraced the Colorado landscape in her art. In that year she received an Individual Painting Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to work with Richard Diebenkorn. In 1997, Duesberry won the Benjamin Altman Landscape Prize from the National Academy of Design. While she had a World Views residency with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) from 1998-1999, Duesberry painted city studies in studio space in some vacant offices of the World Trade Center's North Tower. She says that, because of her connection to the World Trade Center, the tone of her painting saddened after 9/11. In 2005, a PBS documentary was made of Joellyn Duesberry's life, work, and creative process titled Joellyn Duesberry: Dialogue with the Artist. He is best known for his work in photorealism and abstract illusionism. The name Photorealism (also known as Hyperrealism or Superrealism) was coined in reference to those artists whose work depended heavily on photographs, which they often projected onto canvas allowing images to be replicated with precision and accuracy. The exactness was often aided further by the use of an airbrush, which was originally designed to retouch photographs. The movement came about within the same period and context as Conceptual art, Pop art, and Minimalism and expressed a strong interest in realism in art, over that of idealism and abstraction. The first Photo realists were Chuck Close, Don Eddy, Richard Estes, Ralph Goings, Robert Bechtle, Audrey Flack, Denis Peterson, Lowel Nesbitt and Malcolm Morley. Each began practicing some form of Photorealism around the same time, often utilizing different modes of application and techniques, and citing different inspirations for their work. However, for the most part they all worked independent from one another. For example, Chuck Close came of age at the height of Pop art and Andy Warhol's Factory, and was based out of SoHo in lower Manhattan. We have not examined out of frame. Patrick LoCicero was born in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1959. He attended Youngstown State University, Ohio, and the Columbus College of Art and Design. He completed a B.F.A. at Ohio State University in 1982 and an M.F.A. at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1986. His paintings, installations, prints, and multimedia work have been shown in California, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. LoCicero's richly layered imagery is characterized by unusual juxtapositions of everyday objects and classical motifs, which play with the viewer's perception of materials and subjects. LoCicero’s assemblage paintings combine collage with painting. The overlap and collage elements relate directly to the images he depicts, guiding him in his choice of subjects, and come from a variety of sources including the Kama Sutra, antique children’s books, letters and journals. His still life paintings resonate due to the contrast the artist sets up between the collaged surface and the painted surface, as well as the play between the actual shallow space and implied deep space. Patrick specializes in creating mixed-media collages that tell stories. Jean David was a painter and designer, known for his contributions to the Romanian avant-garde and to the early modernist art of Israel (then recently founded). He was the first Israeli artist to be inducted into the illustrious Alliance Graphique Nationale in 1954. He had studied between 1927 and 1937 at various art academies in Paris. In 1929 he participated for the first time at a collective exhibition in Bucharest and in 1933 he had his first personal exhibition (in the same city). In the early '30s he was a member of the Surrealist group "unu" (meaning "one"). In 1942, he left Romania in a boat with 12 other Jews, including Theodor Brauner, the brother of Victor Brauner. After being captured by British authorities in Cyprus, he managed to reach Palestine in 1944. In 1949 he went to live in Jerusalem, where he was active in developing ceramic arts, sculpture works in copper, and artistic tapestry wall hangings under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade and Industry. Together with Marcel Janco, he founded in Israel the artist village known as Ein Hod. He also gained much reputation as a muralist and graphic and poster designer, having designed numerous posters and other works for the El Al air company, Maccabiah games, Zim shipping and The Israel tourist industry. David’s primary importance was in the design of posters. He used a wildly colorful decorative style in his art, which combined illustration, caricature, and national figures. In addition he designed wall hangings for “Maskit,” and also worked in the decoration of public buildings. His paintings had elements of Surrealism and included images from nature and landscapes. Jean Chaleye is known for Landscape, still life and coastal view painting. Considered one of the most important Post Impressionist painters. Jean-Baptiste Chaleye, known as Joannès Chaleyé, was born to working class parents in Saint Etienne in the middle of the 19th Century. He began his career as a commercial engraver at the age of fourteen, which he continued until 1899 when he took a trip to England. He returned the following year to do his military service and on completion returned to the city of his birth. He began his artistic training in Saint Etienne and then at the School of Fine Arts in Lyon in 1896. He was then offered the opportunity to complete his training in Paris. In 1899, he joined the class of Louvrier de Lajolais at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and was also a student of Fernand Cormon at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Through Cormon he me Andre Derain, Mary Cassatt and Dunoyer de Segonzac and a number of ther Barbizon painters influenced by Edouard Manet. Jean Chaleye's life is divided between his attraction for painting and his passion for the art of lace. As early as 1902, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français and the Salon des indépendants. As a renowned painter of flowers, several museums acquired his paintings such as the cities of Puy-en-Velay, Lyon, Clermont-Ferrand and Saint-Gall in Switzerland. In 1903, Louvrier de Lajolais offered him to go to the provinces to teach the art of lacemaking at the École pratique de commerce et d'industrie du Puy-en-Velay. He then set out to replace the traditional geometric and repetitive designs by creations with supple and light forms, inspired by local flora. He devoted his entire life to highlighting the delicate art of lace making, participating in various competitions and international exhibitions during which he won several awards. Appointed director of the National Superior School of Arts and Textile Industries of Roubaix in 1930 but also artistic director of the school of laces of Bailleul, he favors the obtaining by this last one of the Grand Prix at the Exhibition of Brussels in 1935. Promoted to the rank of officer of the Legion of Honor in 1937, his involvement in the recognition of the know-how of the Velay lace industry is recognized. A renowned painter, one recognizes in his paintings as in his lace drawings all the delicacy and the love which he carries to the flowers and to the nature in general. He died in 1960 in Puy-en-Velay. After his death, the house in which he had lived in Puy was turned into the Musée Chaleyé. International exhibitions In 1904, he had the "Lace" section participate in the exhibition at the Galliera Museum in Paris, which presented the lace made according to his ideas. In 1905, he created the fan leaf for the lacemaker Oudin, which was purchased by the Saint-Gall Museum in Switzerland. He participated in various international competitions and exhibitions, during which he received several awards: International Exhibition of Liège (1905): he created a fan leaf decorated with Virginia creeper which took part in this exhibition. French Lace Competition (1907): the “Lace” section, the work of which he directed, won three distinctions: first prize (1000 Francs), second prize in collaboration, and for his personal work, the prize of the Under-Secretary of State for Fine Arts. Franco-British Exhibition in London (1908): gold medal for a braid of fuchsias signed by Chaleyé. Brussels World's Fair (1910): a grand prize was won by three laces signed by Chaleyé (landscape with grisaille effect, a cockfight in colour and a cushion with chestnut decorations with spider webs). Chaleyé also won a gold medal for his collaboration. International Exhibition in Turin (1911): he had produced new drawings which had earned him a gold medal for his collaboration. International Exhibition of Lyon (1914): he was awarded a medal for his collaboration. Participation in the “Lace” and “Cabinetmaking” sections, of which Chaleyé directed the work and designed the models for this exhibition. Painting by Jean Chaleyé exhibited at the Crozatier Museum in Puy-en-Velay Alongside his artistic involvement in lacemaking, he exhibited his paintings at the Salon des artistes français from 1902.
