Classically trained, this painter is capable of rendering humble objects in extraordinary and riveting detail. A single wine bottle becomes an object of contemplation, or possibly desire.
Ciba Karisik was born in Sarajevo in 1959. As a grandson of two artists, he revealed his creative inheritance at an early age. Invited to attend the Sarajevo Academy of Fine Art, Ciba completed his Bachelor and then his Master’s Degree in painting in 1985. Already an established artist, the subsequent war in the early 90's played havoc to this artist's life forcing him to eventually abandon his homeland to immigrate with his family to Canada. For Ciba, his world of painting reflects a philosophy characterized by a profound appreciation for the simple things life has to offer. Objects, interiors, and landscapes are recreated in detail sustained by a quiet mood of reflection. Often using a well trained ability in the trompe l'oeil technique, the artist sharpens his images to increase the tension of memory. Since 1996, Ciba Karisik has produced a steady body of work exhibiting in solo and group exhibitions every year. His paintings have been collected in Canada, the US, England and Europe.

Cantine's work is a poetic and intellectual exploration of a pictorial problem, color as structure which has infinite variations. Cantine was quoted in the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art 2000: "For the past 26 years, I have painted essentially the same still life, which began as a pair of apples and its shadow, and evolved under pressure of color into the present imagery." Cantine may be referred to as a post-minimalist, a term coined by Robert Pincus-Witten in 1971 to describe work with a minimalist tendency but that uses modest materials and aims towards a pure formalist aesthetic.

Listening to Scarlatti - bold, layered, abstract shapes, collage on paper

Vertical composition on paper with a canary yellow acrylic ground over which bristle brushed lines are cross hatched in black. Layered over these central marks is a central collaged strip of paper highlighted in ultra marine blue and grey topped by a tache of white paint. This is balanced by a horizontal strip in white and grey at the foot of the composition held down by another white swipe of white acrylic. A small horizontal collaged rectangle at the upper left keeps the eye moving upwards in the picture plane. This work is unframed. Please ask us about framing options.
Titled "listening to Scarlatti", or en ecoutant Scarlatti in French, the piece may certainly be a response to the sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, an Italian composer and contemporary of Bach and Handel. Scarlatti spent much of his life at the service of the Portugese and Spanish royalty...
