Otto Rogers
Blue Leaf Still Life - blue, green, intimate, cubist, collaged acrylic on paper

2007

About the Item

Cubist, sliced views of three sides of a potted plant in collaged paper with sapphire blue and green leaves line up on a background of shifting depths. Rogers work, rooted in a cubist-constructivist tradition, was recognized by critic Clement Greenberg in 1963 as having a “fullness of inspiration”. In keeping with this sentiment, Rogers’ tonal expression in this piece is contemplative, spiritual and uplifting. Rogers (1935-2019) was an established senior Canadian artist whose work, paintings and sculpture, is included in more than 30 public collections across Canada, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the McMichael Canadian Collection, the National Gallery of Canada. His work is also in the Museu d’art contemporain de Barcelona and the National Gallery of Iceland as well as numerous private and corporate collections Rogers helped sustain the Emma Lake Workshops which provides a meeting place for many of North America’s most respected visual artists and critics including Clement Greenberg, Barnett Newman, Jules Olitiski, Kenneth Noland, Jack Shadbolt, Helen Frankenthaler. In 2007, a published book of his work Otto Donald Rogers, included a foreword by British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro.

  • Zen Garden - bright, floral, impasto, abstract expressionist, acrylic on canvas
    By Adam Cohen
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
A floral motif in shades of pink, blue, green and lemon is used in an all over pattern by artist Adam Cohen in this delightfully bright painting. Cohen intersects the language of Abstract Expressionism with narrative to re-invent the experience of action painting in a contemporary context. The artist is known for his applications of thick impasto, applied in layers that he cuts through and moves while the pigments are wet.  Cohen studied at Philadelphia’s Tyler School of Art and lived and painted in Rome for a year. He was one of the first artists to use Photoshop, which helped launch his career as an illustrator. After many successful years as an illustrator he returned to his first love...
