When I was a young girl, I enjoyed walks along the Indian countryside, taking in the beauties nature had to offer. Twenty years ago I moved to California, a place so different from my native land. I felt out of place and disoriented. That is when I found sanctuary in nature.
I have a unique technique of painting: Instead of conventional tools like brushes, I paint with air. I dilute the oil paints, pour them on a wood panel and blow air with an air blower or a leaf blower. Vapor-like shapes appear and disappear on the panel, leaving only traces of the initial layer. There is a constant process of adding and subtracting layers of paint until I get the final composition.

Playing with colors and movement, creating new compositions -- my best work comes when there is freedom to create without any strict plan. With intuition and spontaneity taking over, the result is often a surprise. To me, everything flows, and there is always a sense of balance and harmony that can emerge out of disorder. I love the ambiguous and mysterious nature of abstraction. Through self-discovery and experimentation, I am allowing dynamic energy that manifests through the joy of creating. The result is loose interpretations of anything that exists between the mind and reality, therefore each painting is unique and sometimes inexplicable.

Ethereal and calming, Novi Lim's painting transports its audience to a land that is both dreamlike yet familiar. Lim Finds inspiration in the natural world, and seeks to capture their essence through an organic and sensory creative process. In the artist's own words: "Often, imagining a mythical flower that blooms and lit up in the nighttime or seeing something as simple as the calming gradient of the colorful sky at sundown, or the surface of water that glimmers which makes me wonder about the mystery of the deepest oceans -- piqued my creative process and subliminal stimuli." Guided by instinctive feeling, Lim lets the movements of her paintbrush flow as she experiments with atmospheric lighting, transparency, and color. The result is an ambiguous landscape that treads between the subconscious and waking world.

I started a series of paintings of places in the town I live in: Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. In many New England small towns, the most important buildings are the white protestant churches in the commons. In Shrewsbury, this church is called “the First Congregational Church”. So it made sense to start my painting collection with this church. My fellow painters told me that New England churches have been painted millions of times, and that it could be a boring subject. However, I was struck by the beauty in these churches. Coming from the French Loire Valley where winters are grey and rainy, I loved the crisp, blue sky of New England in winter and the way the church and the snow shared the same pearly white color. Compared to where I come from, churches are instead made of yellow ochre stone and snow is very rare. Overall, I just started to paint what was different for me. I have been asked numerous times by my loyal customers to create more holiday winter cards of my paintings. As I was looking outside my window in this month of March, the snowy scenes in front of me were an ideal inspiration for me. And to make things even better for my creative juices, Paris had just been covered a few weeks before by a couple inches of snow. This happens very rarely and the whole city was paralysed. Parisians were unhappy, as always, but Paris under the snow is magnificent. I asked my good parisian friend to share with me the pictures she took of Paris under the snow. Between the winter view from my window and my friend’s pictures, I had enough material to immerse myself into this project. In 3 weeks, I created 8 paintings and I had the best time of my life!!! I wish I could do that all the time. I painted holiday lights, ornaments, some snow, and I even had an american cardinal in snowy Paris!!! I felt right at home between my 2 countries: France and the US! What wintery scenes or holiday scenes do you find magnificent?
