"Wood wall sculpture. 48 inches wide. I work with wood like a painter works with oils and a sculptor with stone. From a distance, lines, shapes, contours and shadows are easily seen but when you move from side to side, the change in perspective alters the image like the features of a face when it turns. If a light source moves, shadows in the piece move with it like the sun moving across a landscape. As you approach the piece, shallow contours appear like swells on a lake and intricate patterns emerge. You can't help but touch the smooth flowing surface to feel the highly finished solid wood. The furniture grade modified tung oil allows that. It also makes my art easy to clean if necessary. The lines and shapes in my art are the natural colors of solid wood joined along curves. No inlays, veneers, dyes or stains are used."

"Wood wall sculpture. This piece is based on a style I made for the Health Partners' Behavioral Science Building in St. Paul, MN. I work with wood like a painter works with oils and a sculptor with stone. From a distance, lines, shapes, contours and shadows are easily seen but when you move from side to side, the change in perspective alters the image like the features of a face when it turns. If a light source moves, shadows in the piece move with it like the sun moving across a landscape. Aluminum can-tabs chained together with safety pins are layered, massed and attached to an MDF backing creating a dense sparkling texture. The can-tabs are reflective, glinting in the light, catching the eye of those who pass by them. These shield-like, glittering wall pieces have the presence of valuable treasure, but closer inspection reveals that the treasure is made from can-tabs, one of many common disposable items that continuously pass through our hands.

When the dice is cubic, the results are digital, but when the dice getting closer to the ball shape the results could be analog and infinite when it is a perfect ball. Old cobblestones were used to make the heavy dices. In 3 steps the cube became a ball, a real rolling dice.

Fred Klingelhofer, a primarily self-taught artist, grew up in a Chicago south side neighborhood. He received a BS degree in physics from Roosevelt University and worked as an engineer for 30 years. During those years he enrolled in art workshops and classes at a nearby community college completing courses in figure drawing, 2D and 3D design, ceramics, sculpting the figure, welding and metal sculpture.
