Blue State Red State, Modern and Contemporary Wall Art with Leather, 2019

About the Item

Artist Commentary: Blue State Red State is meant to address the intense political divisiveness we have been experiencing since the election of Donald Trump. We are constantly being bombarded with information as well as misinformation making the years of the Trump administration seem surreal as if we were living a George Orwell novel. It also addresses the fact that color has transcended its nature to become a symbol of our hopes and goals for this nation. Keywords: painting, modern, contemporary, leather, steel, wire, cable, abstract, wood, weaving, tile, mixed media Artist Biography: I was born in Mexico City in 1957 and moved to Los Angeles in 1984. I'm told that when I was just born and laying in one of those bassinets in the hospital, my paternal grandparents came to see me and while looking through the window into the baby ward, my grandfather said to my dad: "give him a pen, he wants to write." In a way, my grandfather was right. I needed a pen indeed, but not really to write, but to draw. One of my earliest memories of connecting with the art world (around age four or five) is sitting in a corner in my mom's art class with a bunch of colored chalk just scribbling away. From then on, I traded the chalk for anything that could make a mark on a surface. I have filled scrapbooks with notes and ideas, have studied art history, and relish every opportunity to see and learn what other artists are doing. As a teenager I started taking photographs and used them as inspiration for drawings, paintings, and mixed media works. For the last 50 years I have dedicated myself to a process of exploration and discovery, and it has been an enriching and rewarding experience.

  • Oswald Home Laundry
    Located in Boston, MA
Artist Commentary: It all starts with Linnie Rose Oswald. She was my Great-Grandmother, the eighth of Elnore Rose's nine children. (All but one were girls.) During the 1920s she operated her own business and posed for a photo beside the laundry's vehicle. Family stories tell of a feisty red-headed woman with a will of iron, a temper, and a very strong work ethic who drove down the middle of Huntington, West Virginia's city streets as if she owned them. In all likelihood, Linnie needed these qualities. Being a female business woman in this era had to be hard! She would have gotten the right to vote around then. Later, Linnie owned almost a block of town and rented apartments. I remember her from the days when managing her apartments was problematic. Linnie lived to be ninety-six years old but dementia took her years beforehand. I was in college when she died in a nursing home in Kentucky. The last time I saw her, she wasn't aware of the visit. Her mind was elsewhere ... talking about the clothes she was making and the quilts she would stitch. What a woman! Keywords: art quilt, textile, paint Artist Biography: Susan Lenz...

  • Nike's Advice XVII
    Located in Boston, MA
Artist Commentary: This work was started several years ago during a public art performance called Nike's Advice. I painted 130 feet of unprimed canvas with the public. It was scary! I don't consider myself a painter. I was having to accept Nike's Advice myself ... as in "Just Do It". Later I used my sewing machine to free-motion stitch around the paint, adding detail. Finally, the work was mounted on a stretcher bar with blue painted edges before being coated with UV filtering epoxy. Keywords: Mixed media, abstract, textile, paint Artist Biography: Susan Lenz...
