Chinese Archaic Bronze Wine Vessel, Bianhu, Han Dynasty, China

About the Item

A sublime Chinese archaic bronze wine vessel, called a bianhu, Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD), China. The bianhu with a flattened oblong body, applied taotie masks, and loose ring handles. The bronze wine vessel set on a high rectangular splayed foot. The sloped shoulders supporting a wide cylindrical neck and mouth that flares slightly outwards. The body of the vessel features curved, recessed panels that follow the curve of the. body, creating a near heart shape. The dark olive colored bronze with an incredible and complex patina of yellow orange cuprite, with small areas of bright green malachite. The underneath of the loose ring handlers with remnants of gilding, indicating the whole vessel may have been originally gilt. Provenance: Private Austin, TX collection, collected in China circa 1910's.
