19th Century Chinese Shang Dynasty Bronze Liquor Jug Fengding He Type

About the Item

Exceptional reproduction of a he type liquor Jug in bronze of the Shang Dynasty (17th-11th century BC). This bronze jug trypod represent a owl's head. We can see symbol frieze just under the head. One copy is representing at the Guimet Museum, the national museum of asian arts in Paris. Here are the information they give about the piece : "These containers with three breast legs and a closed top, which earned them the name fengding he, probably come from Neolithic ceramic prototypes which in turn evoke models in metal, hammered and riveted, but of which there are no witnesses. Bronze examples usually have a high tubular spout at the front of the covered dome. The disappearance of this beak in favor of the very naturalistic one of an owl-type night bird with round eyes and small ears is probably due to the appearance of this animal motif in the second period of the Shang period. (zoomorphic bronzes of the you and zun type or, real round bumps like the astonishing marble preserved at the Academia Sinica in Taipei). Fengdig he of this form are particularly rare, only two other examples are known, one preserved in Japan, the other in the museum of Los Angeles. In view of the more descriptive style of the decorative frieze which surrounds the neck of these two jugs, it would seem that that of the Guimet museum belongs to the last stage of the very short history of these very curious ritual bronzes".
