About the Item

An elegant and unusually large Korean Goryeo bronze bottle vase with green patina, Goryeo Dynasty, 12th/13th century, Korea. The graceful vase of typical bottle form, with a bulbous body set upon a short ring foot. The round body tapers upwards to a narrow neck with a dramatically flared mouth. A lush and complicated patina of green malachite covers the entirety of the vessel. The vessel is undecorated, save for a series of simple alternating raised and incised lines that circumscribe the vessel, including the mouth and the foot. The interior of the mouth and neck with further incised circumscribed lines. This bottle form seems to have been directly imported from China, where it is known as a yuhuchunping. The shape rose to popularity during the Tang Dynasty, and was an important form for Buddhist ritual vessels of that era. From China, the shape spread to Japan and Korea and can be found in their artistic and religious repertoires.
