About the Item

This is a very good Chinese porcelain circular deep plate or dish, made for the export (Canton) market, which we date towards the end of the first half of the 18th century, in the early Qing-Qianlong period. The piece is well potted of a very white porcelain and has a glassy glaze with a light blue tone. The foot-rim is very neatly hand cut. The plate is very well hand decorated with good detail in varying shades of a deep cobalt blue, with a glaze of a very soft light blue shade. The plate is hand painted in the very decorative Aster flower pattern. It has a central hand-painted decoration of radiating Aster flower heads all painted within panels at the cavetto, with four further Aster flower heads in the central section, which makes a very striking pattern. This known Kangxi period (1662-1722) design on a very similar plate is illustrated on page 51 of the book On identifying old Chinese Porcelain by Willoughby Hodgson. The outer rim has a cafe-au-lait mid brown finish and the reverse is decorated with three floral sprigs in cobalt blue. We date this piece to circa 1745 or possibly slightly earlier. Overall a very beautifully hand painted Blue and white Chinese Plate from the 18th Century
