About the Item

This richly enameled porcelain dish is a 19th-century example of Chinese export ware in the Rose Medallion tradition, produced in the kilns of Jingdezhen for Western markets during the Qing Dynasty, likely during the Guangxu period (1875–1908). Shaped with a gently lobed rim and delicately scalloped edges, the surface is organized into four alternating cartouches of figural and floral decoration, all surrounding a central medallion. The figural scenes depict elaborately dressed courtiers and attendants engaged in formalized social exchanges, rendered with vibrant enamels and detailed brushwork within architectural interiors that reflect the decorative conventions of Chinese narrative painting. These are interspersed with panels of lush botanical abundance—pairings of blooming peonies, songbirds, and butterflies—symbolic of harmony and seasonal renewal. The central medallion contains a nestling pair of birds amid flowering branches, encircled by a gilt border that unites the composition. The surrounding ground is densely filled with curling foliate scrollwork in famille rose enamels, punctuated by gilt highlights and auspicious motifs such as bats and fruits, referencing good fortune and longevity. The plate’s lavish polychromy, symmetrical layout, and intricate surface treatment reflect both the technical virtuosity of Qing enamelers and the preferences of Western consumers during the height of the export porcelain trade. Objects of this type were particularly popular in American and European households from the mid-19th century onward, often used for both display and formal table service. Measures: 9.5" w x 10.5" h x 1.75" d.
